Downtown sports bar and Racism...please read.

Over the weekend there was an incident at the Downtown Sports bar.  As you know this is where we do our Trivia every Wednesday night.  I read the story and some of the review on Yelp and needless to say, I'm shocked and appalled that these events might have happened at one of the places we frequent.

Clearly I don't condone actual racism, though as many of you see in my stand up, I do make fun of lots of groups of people (it's all in fun).

I know Todd, the GM, and he has done nothing but work with our group.  He was the first of the restaurants for meet and greet Monday's that agreed to give us free appetizers.  When the appetizers ran out, he even made sure to put more out for our group.

Near as I can tell, when we head to the DTSB, we have about 25% black members and about 15-20% Asian...not to mention that I'm Jewish and pretty vocal about it.

In the time I have been at this location, I have not seen a single instance of racism.

Upon seeing the postings online I immediately gave Todd a call and this was his response to me.

On Friday's and Saturday's they get pretty packed.  They also have a membership policy (though I know it isn't always enforced).  When they see someone in the bar that isn't a member and isn't buying drinks, they ask them to buy a drink or leave.  This is because there is a line of people waiting to get in.  From a business standpoint, it makes sense to have people coming in and paying to drink.

I wanted every member of the group to know about this.  Keep in mind, he is hosting our meet up appreciation party, knowing full well that we have lots of diverse members in our group.  This is a guy who has been good to us and I think we should continue our patronage.

That being said, email me directly if you have concerns.  I understand anyone who doesn't want to come to this meet up, but I also want you to know that I'll continue running this location for our meet up.  Not because I'm a racist, but because I believe we should look from our own experiences as a group and not only what we've heard from disgruntled patrons who've been kicked out of the bar.

I'll be keeping a close eye on this story and hope to see you all out there soon.
