What we're about

Hello and Welcome to the Red Line Book Club! .

The long dormant Red Line Book Club, (formerly the Davis Square Book Club) is now in its third iteration. Members old and new join us to read great works of fiction from ancients to moderns, and gather each month for a lively discussion of our selection.

A few notes on format:

Attendees, do your best to complete the selection, and as you read, feel free to post your thoughts or questions about the material. The title for the next meeting will be chosen at the close of each meeting. So keep in mind a list of your favorites.

Please RSVP as space is limited. Our new venue is in Jamaica Plain, near the Stony Brook stop on the Orange Line. For those who prefer to drive, there is plenty of on street parking...a distinct advantage over Cambridge. Since we're meeting in a private home, the exact address will be sent by email the Friday before the meet to all who have replied to attend.

Free meetup reading club, but...

A small contribution to offset the Meetup fee would be appreciated.

Looking forward to our next meet.

Thomas Mann's Death in Venice. The desparate love of an elder man for a boy

A short classic. Meeting in three weeks on Saturday... It is irresistable to add "In Wilde's definition, "the love that dare not speak its name" was: ... such a great affection of an elder for a younger man ... such as Plato made the very basis of his philosophy ... It is that deep, spiritual affection that is as pure as it is perfect ... There is nothing unnatural about it. It is intellectual, and it repeatedly exists between an elder and a younger man, when the elder man has intellect, and the younger man has all the joy, hope and glamour of life before him.
