Sustainable Backyard Tour 2012

  • Jun 24, 2012 · 11:00 AM

See firsthand how homeowners in St. Louis City and County are transforming their yards from energy intensive, unsustainable lawns to heavenly havens of green!

Tour sites showcase a range of green living practices, including low-impact lawn care, composting and using recycled materials creatively, organic gardening, chicken and beekeeping, gardening with native plants, mushrooms, fruit & nut trees, as well as rainwater conservation, pesticide and herbicide reduction, renewable energy production and backyard habitat creation.

The second-annual Sustainable Backyard Tour is set for Sunday, June 24th from 11 to 4 p.m.

Wonderful event! I wish it was over 2 days (25 on Sat and 25 on Sunday) so that I could have more time to see more yards. There was so much I wanted to see!

The Dye's have a great piece of property and they are making use of it. Great garden, orchard (we got to pick plums and take a bag home.). I just need the plum jelly recipe.

This is such a great day. We want to north county and really liked the 3 we saw. Maps adding zip codes nice improvement. A suggestion on the other meetup group is to have more days. Maybe city one day, county the next. There is just so much to see. I learn something at every house.

I visited 4 houses in the Kirkwood area and enjoyed seeing what they've done to their backyards.

I didn't have time to get to all the yards I had mapped out, but really enjoyed the ones that I did attend! Thanks for organizing this Terry! You are amazing!

This was my first time opening my yard up for people to tour. Everyone came at about 1pm. I had 4 group of people show up, which for my first time didn't seem to bad. I will work on getting North County better represented next year ")

Some houses were kind of lame and did not really fit into the sustainable model. Some houses were fantastic

In case anyone else wanted to map the property at 1625 Redmon the zip is 63138

    June 24, 2012

  • Melissa C.

Never mind.....Terry already sent out something to us on the Redmon property in North County ")

Yea, another North County home ") do you have the zip for them and I will print up some flyers with directions from my house?

    June 23, 2012

  • Jacquelyne A.

1625 redmon in north county didn't make it into the flyer. Please stop by and see what that family is doing. They received good reviews last year, please show a good attendance at their home and enjoy the day!

We appreciate your registering for this FREE Tour so that we can estimate the level of interest in this year's event. You will not receive an email or other confirmation. Your registration, aka your "Virtual Ticket", is merely for our information. Please visit the website: www.sustainablebackyardtour.com for the complete tour listings and map, a PDF of the guide booklet, or stop by Kakao Chocolate in Maplewood or Local Harvest on Morgan Ford to pick up a tour map on Sunday.

danielle/mary lou: a downloadable pdf is available, listing each address, what's sustainable there...free, printed booklets are available at home eco, local harvest, kakao (and some host yards?)...

mary lou: this self-guided tour is free; nobody will check tickets...registration was requested to help yard hosts and organizers know how many people to anticipate, how many materials would be needed (for this year or continue with this annually), etc....so far, 1,000 attendees have registered!

Just curious how/when we will be getting the map and more information about the tour. Will it be emailed to us?

    June 20, 2012

  • Danielle

In that case, count me in! :D

Danielle, the tour isn't a single group of people who all travel from place to place together; it's individuals or small groups that plan their own itineraries and visit the hosts displaying what interests them the most. This makes the tour flexible for all our busy schedules!

I attend church until noon on Sunday. Is there anyway to meet up to finish the tour if you cannot make it at 11?
