Our 2014 Book Series - The Book of the New Sun

Few book series can be as well regarded as Gene Wolf's Book of the New Sun which was published in four yearly volumes between 1980 & 1983. The Shadow of the Torturer, The Claw of the Conciliator, The Sword of the Lictor & The Citadel of the Autarch redefined the boundaries of Science Fiction / Fantasy, won or were nominated for every major award and the hidden meanings of their texts have been the subject of debate and critical analysis ever since.

In 2014 The Science Fiction Book Club will discuss each of the four parts on the months with a 5th Monday.

In addition to the four parts of the Book of the New Sun we will try to find time to read and discuss two additional books related to the Book of the new Sun.

  • Urth of the New Sun: [AMAZON] Abebooks Seen by many as the fifth part to the book of the new sun and by Gene Wolfe himself as a coda. It is set almost entierly outside of Urth
  • Shadows of the New Sun: Stories in Honor of Gene Wolfe [AMAZON] A collection of short stories set in the same background as The Book fo the New Sun. Features contributions by Neil Gaiman, David Brin, David Drake, Nancy Kress, and many others, plus two new short stories by Gene Wolfe himself.

In addition you may find Lexicon Urthus very useful. Lexicon Urthus is an alphabetical dictionary for the complete Urth Cycle by Gene Wolfe: The Shadow of the Torturer; The Claw of the Conciliator; The Sword of the Lictor; The Citadel of the Autarch; the sequel Urth of the New Sun; the novella Empires of Foliage and Flower; the short stories "The Cat," "The Map," and "The Old Woman Whose Rolling Pin Is the Sun"; and Gene Wolfe's own commentaries in The Castle of the Otter. The first edition was nominated for a World Fantasy Award. This second edition, available for the first time in paperback, includes 300 new entries.

Each meeting will be limited to only 24 places.

PLEASE NOTE: Members are strongly encouraged to read the book's of The Book of the New Sun at the same time and not read ahead. This is to preserve the groups ability to speculate on upcoming events, which forms a large part of a shared narrative whether it be a book or TV series.
