January 2014 meeting info!

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions, meet on the third Wednesday of each month to share everything from techniques and project ideas to information about local suppliers and much more. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, January 15 at 7:00, and Pete Hauser will be our guest speaker, sharing his wealth of knowledge on furniture making.

Pete will be discussing the use and application of figured hardwoods in his woodworking projects, and will be bringing in an occasional table that he built. This table features four-way tapered legs with pyramid ends, and a floating top made of book matched, figured California claro walnut. He’ll spend some time talking about the process he used to make the table and some of the advanced woodworking challenges it presented. Pete will also be bringing in examples of jewelry boxes and a tool box that demonstrate some of the beautiful results you can achieve with a little imagination and solid woodworking skills.

Pete spent 10 years traveling the country finding sources for figured lumber and veneers and will share some of these sources with our group. If you’re hoping to bump up your woodworking projects a notch or two, Pete’s discussion might possibly be the best way to nudge you in that direction.

This meeting will be held at Studio: Wood It Is!, 2267 West Gowan, unit 106 in North Las Vegas. As always, the public is welcome to attend the meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. But remember that there are a limited number of chairs in the woodshop. Attendees might want to bring a folding chair if they wish to sit during the meeting.

If you have questions or need directions, call the studio at 631-1870.

This is a great group of people. Pete did an excellent job in showing us his stash of gorgeously figured wood, and the many creative things one can do with these materials. I had a great time.
