Sin City Woodworkers November meeting

Sin City Woodworkers, a Vegas valley social and networking group committed to serious (and not so serious!) woodworking discussions, meet on the third Wednesday of each month to share everything from techniques and ideas to information about local suppliers and much more. Our next meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, November 21, at 7:00.

We could call this upcoming SCWW meeting - “What I Did Last Summer with One Hundred Board Feet of Cherry.”

Ever wonder what you can do with one hundred board feet of lumber?  Wednesday’s meeting should answer that question.

This past summer, Lupe picked up one hundred board feet of cherry from Toys for Smiles, when they were selling some of their excess inventory. Her first project was a rocking chair - loosely based on a plan from an old issue of Fine Woodworking magazine. The original plan was for a child-sized rocking chair, so Lupe had to tweak the plans, enlarging it for an adult. It’s not as easy as it sounds, but she claims she’ll have to wrestle the chair away from her husband to bring it to our next meeting.

Still having additional material left, Lupe took a Table Making Class and decided to make a printer table for her office.

It’s hard to believe that she’s been working with wood for less than two years - and when you see these two pieces - there’s a good chance you’ll be inspired to take your work a notch higher.  She’s concentrated on learning various new skills, like pattern routing, tapering, building and hanging drawers, making tambours, and much more.

This meeting will be held at Studio: Wood It Is!, 2267 West Gowan, unit 106 in North Las Vegas. As always, the public is welcome to attend the meeting, so members - please feel free to bring a guest along. But remember that there are a limited number of chairs in the woodshop. Attendees might want to bring a folding chair if they wish to sit during the meeting. If you have questions or need directions, call the studio at 631-1870.
