Distance: 9.25 miles
Elevation gain: 2,800 feet
Hiking time: 5-7 hours
Well maintained trail, out and back.
I travelled up to Wrightwood today (Wed. 4/27/16) and I talked with the forest service and I was informed that the roadway, on Hwy 2, would be cleared to Dawson Saddle by this friday (4/29/16). The forest service person was Spiritwolf, a person from the Apache nation and his wife is from the Comanche nation. We had a long conversation, which provided me with further knowledge in the ability to enjoy the beauty of this forest that we want to venture into. As with all groups of people, you have the good and the bad and each individual must be able to look into the person and see if they have good in their heart. I wish you well in your ability to see into the person's heart and not be fooled by the outward appearance.
This hike will not be a fast paced hike and I tend to stop and wait for the tail end of the group to catch up so that I am in view of everyone a majority of the time.
The trail starts from the Dawson Saddle trail (7901’) with a steady grade incline of 1.8 miles to meet up with the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT). From there we will proceed on a quick ascent to the right 0.3 of a mile to Throop Peak (9138’) before retracing our steps back to the PCT for another 1.3 miles to Mt Burnham (8997’). This section of this trail is mostly on the ridge between Sheep Mountain Wilderness and Angeles National Forest, overlooking the Mojave Desert on the North and San Gabriel Mountains on the South. We will continue on the PCT for another 1.1 miles to Mt Baden Powell (9399’). We will take a well-deserved rest at the summit for snack/lunch while enjoying the 360 degrees panoramic views, before returning the same way down.
Recommendation: At least 3 liters of water/electrolytes , snack/lunch, Hiking shoes, Trekking poles, camera, and microspikes just encase we need them.
