11/22/63 is a novel by Stephen King about a time traveler who attempts to prevent the assassination of John F. Kennedy which occurred on November 22, 1963 (the date of the novel's title). The novel was announced on King's official site on March 2, 2011.[1] A short excerpt was released online on June 1, 2011,[2] and another excerpt was published in the October 28, 2011 issue of Entertainment Weekly[3] The novel was published on November 8, 2011,[4] and quickly became a number-one bestseller. It stayed on the list for an additional seventeen weeks. 11/22/63 won the 2011 Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Best Mystery/Thriller and the 2012 International Thriller Writers Award for Best Novel,[5][6] and was nominated for the 2012 British Fantasy Award for Best Novel[7] and the 2012 Locus Award for Best Science Fiction Novel.[8]

The novel required deep research to accurately portray the late 1950s and early 1960s.[9] King commented on the amount of research it required, saying "I've never tried to write anything like this before. It was really strange at first, like breaking in a new pair of shoes."[9] The novel's time-travel premise marks it as science fiction, specifically the alternative history subgenre, although the extensive period research undertaken by King, dealing with real-life events and people between 1958 and 1963, gives it a strong feeling of historical fiction.

DONE!! Better late than never. Got to the point this weekend where several neighbors were asking "what page are you on?" because they've been seeing me outside for the past two weeks reading it. Even got some applause when I finally closed the book a couple of hours ago. haha

    **some spoilers below**

I expected to somewhat skim the last 250 pages I hadn't read at the time we met, but I read them in full. I loved "the chase" with both G/J & S and, even though I knew how it would end after our meetup, I still thoroughly enjoyed getting to that point. I don't recall any discussion of S as such a bad-a**, so that surprised me, and I loved it!

Looking forward to the next two reads and meetups!

Yes, it was great fun! I really love Stephen King, and the whole concept of time travel and sci fi stuff like that, so I ran my big mouth quite a bit.

Any chance for August we could pick a shorter read? Such a busy time now and we've had some pretty hefty reads the past few months.

I'd like to re-nominate one Guy brought to a vote when we met a couple of months ago at Laura's suggestion in abstentia:

Life's Operating Manual: With the Fear and Truth Dialogues
    By Tom Shadyac

While shorter than the last few books at a mere 261 pages, it isn't necessrily a "lighter" read though and could be great for discussion.

Personally, I've never been able to shake the end-of-summer season from some sort of "reboot"--new teacher, new subjects, new goals... I wouldn't mind a read in Aug that fostered that. Definitely open to other suggestions! Mostly I'm just hoping maybe it could be under 350 pages for this time of year? *hoping I'm not the only one*

In the meantime, I love this month's read and can't wait to see you all Wed!

Sorry for the short notice. I thought I could get the book read but hopefully someone else from the Wait List was smarter than I and went ahead and read 1963 thinking they might make it off the Wait List. Next time I will no better and start.

    Rob,

So as our date for the meeting draws near, I was pondering ideas for July's book ( as have others I am sure). In case nobody knew, last week was the 150th anniversary of the battle of Gettysburg. Not that I myself am even a big civil war buff, but this does interest me in getting to know more about American history. So I found a book called Gettysburg: the last invasion that was released in May and the author is Allen C. Guelzo. Just wanted to throw it on the table and see what people thought.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of love for the Sherlock Holmes book. Please let me know if you want to keep it or switch to 1963 by Stephen King.
    Majority rules .
I'll give people until the end of Friday to weigh in.

    May 24, 2013

I'm having second thoughts about the book I recommended for July... I liked it, but thinking the rest of you may not. So why don't we go with Sherlock Holmes for the July book. Thoughts?

    May 24, 2013

    • RobC13

I will schedule Holmes for early July and we can discuss our normal end of month July book choice during our June meetup

      May 24, 2013

  • Laura A.

looks like there is enough interest....do you want to schedule a date and time. Our group is growing fast....perhaps we should have a couple meet ups a month?

    May 24, 2013

  • RobC13

This meetup was meant to be a suggestion by a member.

If enough people are interested I will schedule for early July in addition to our regular monthly meeting.
