What we're about

The Spahr Center was created in March 2015 through the merger of Marin AIDS Project and Spectrum LGBT Center.

From the beginning, the two agencies had a strong connection through their mutual founder, Jane Spahr. In 1982, she created Ministry of Light which became Spectrum LGBT Center in 1992. In 1984, in response to the AIDS epidemic, Jane Spahr also founded Marin AIDS Support Network. It was renamed Marin AIDS Project (MAP), also in 1992. MAP has always been the only AIDS service organization in the county and Spectrum has been Marin’s only LGBT Center. Now they continue as programs of The Spahr Center.

Through the years, MAP and Spectrum worked side by side, each providing services, support and advocacy. MAP concentrated on direct services and prevention/education for Marin residents living with and affected by HIV/AIDS while Spectrum focused on advocacy, classroom education and supportive services for the LGBTQ community in Marin and also the North Bay. The agencies decided to merge to gain efficiency and strength, assuring their work would continue and creating a path for stability into the future.

Today, The Spahr Center stands as a strong, respected leader in Marin providing high quality, LGBTQ and HIV programs, services, education and support.
