700 Photos

Seven Hundred Photos is back on even bigger and better than before. There will be live fashion installations, bands and art to shoot as usual.

We will meet outside the Darlo Bar at 6:15pm on the corner of Darlinghurst Road and Liverpool St, and then line up on the queues to get into the 700 Photos event at around 6:30pm. If you come later than that, then just jump on the line. 700 Photos starts at 7-10pm so come over when you want.

We will be there for a few hours and then afterwards meet back in the bar downstairs for a drink or two. We will try to meet as many of you on the night, but as there are so many coming (let alone all the people not coming as the Meetup group), it is going to be difficult. Whether you see us or not, you will have a photographic experience that will make you crave for more.

Here are the details of 700 Photos:

THURSDAY 28 JUNE 7PM-10PM DARLO BAR,

306 LIVERPOOL ST, DARLINGHURST

$2 drinks, $5 entry.

Well it was like a sauna in there, and I felt like we were packed in there like sardines in a can - there wasn't much room to move in the hotel rooms. You had to jostle a bit to get a possie - but pretty much everyone was patient & friendly . But it was a helluva lot of fun. There were some great 'models' wearing some amazing outfits in the rooms to 'shoot'. Tip my hat to them cause they there for hours in the heat & would've been blinded by flash after flash - so well done! Obviously a lot of work went into the costumes & props - great job by all involved. Some of the rooms had very little lighting which made it a bit tricky to photograph. Congrats to Jesse Willesee & the organisers & all the models. A great event & I'll be back to do it again! :)

This was my first meet with other photographers/models/designers and it was interesting to see how others work. Unfortunately only took under 20 photos (due to the fact I was more or less soaking up the fabulous atmosphere), however would be interested in attending more.

This was the first time i've attended 700 photos. Lots of squashed and sweaty but happy snappers. I even spotted a few fellow-Olympus shooters :)

Hey guys yep about 15 people fit in a room at once, a little more in the bigger rooms. I think it’s going to be more crowded this year than usual, try and get there early I’d say xx

    June 27, 2012

  • Marta J.

John, yep you can come and go once you have paid the entry fee, or you can arrive later when it's not as crazy. A TIP: if you come early and you have the correct $5 change you'll all move through faster xx

Someone mentioned coming early, if you can it's worth staying till late, it's hard at first to get a shot without another photographer in it.

    June 21, 2012

  • Marta J.

Sahil that's so great! We are working on organising a bigger version at a bigger venue (it takes a lot of organising as you can imagine) so that it's not so sweaty! x

Amateur photographer(like me) this is a great place to start for portfolio. Years ago I learned the basics of how to use a dslr camera by taking pictures of landscapes and stationery objects, but no one was interested working with me. This event gave me a great platform to start building my portfolio, ever since I have worked with a number of models and I am continuing grow my portfolio, had not been this event I would have still be taking pictures of landscapes which limited my learning. Good L

Hi Marta, I gathered as much but as a photographer it is part of the whole process to have a relationship with the model to get the shots you want. I understand that the the artist is directing the model to not react, which is fair enough from the artists point of view but not mine.

Sorry for all the messages guys! I promise this is the last one: finally: SEVEN HUNDRED PHOTOS

Ps. Brent we will brief all the models to respond to requests where possible. Sometimes they will have been instructed by the artists not to change position etc but we will make sure to tell them to be as giving as they can xx

Featuring installations by famed designer Phoenix Keating (who dressed Lady Gaga on her last visit to Sydney), legendary fashion film director Alex Goddard, vintage label Laurel and Hector, artist Jesse Willesee, cult label We Were Warriors and many more, this is a live fashion show like now other. Performances from bands Buzz Kull and New Brutalists will cap off the night. Plus buy some exclusive threads in the one night only pop-up fashion store where punters can pick up one-off finds!

    June 5, 2012

it was one of the best events I've ever attended!

Bring any gear you feel to, I did last year, but will stick with tripod camera and flash gun this year.
One of the models found several of us on FB and added us as friends.

I have just noticed as a group we only managed to upload 259 photos from Darlo Bar. Hopefully we all should aim to get close to 700 photos for the sake of the name of the event.

wow thanks guys for complete information... can't wait till June :) ... so I'm gonna bring my f2.8-50mm lens as you said there is not much light. Just not sure about the crowd over, do you think a zoom lens helps? say a 300mm

f8... more seriously Shaz, as with every time you take a shot, you will have to judge the conditions in front of you. Most likely the rooms will be dimly lit so a fast lens to have your shutter as fast as possible will help. So will a flash. However you might prefer motion blur so that throws my comments out the window. Besides this there might spot lights that make the room as bright as day. So it's really up to you to decide on the night. Otherwise ask when you are there.

    May 31, 2012

  • Sahil M.

@Shaz, [masked] will be ideal lens for zoomoing but its all about positioning in the crowd I reckon. Find an ideal spot and try different setting to suit your likeness. Some place the lights are too bright, some are too dim. When I was learning I was advised to start with Auto mode, check camera's info and then start with 1 or 2 stops up or down in manual mode as per your requirements. Not the best advice but come in handy. And don't forget the great mentors in the group they are always helpful.

    May 31, 2012

  • shaz

Any idea how big these rooms are so know what lens to carry and what lens(es) others are carrying, I only have one lens[masked] on a APS-C DSLR, also what’s the ideal setting to be used in terms of aperture/speed/iso/white balance/metering, shaz

Yes, sweat is part of the fun! Good point Sahil raises about talking to the models I talk to them and direct them then I turn around and see 50 cameras pointed at the pose I asked the model to do! I asked a few of them last time about being asked to pose some where really happy and wanted to be asked a couple did pose when asked and one in particular didn't even acknowledge my existence!

    1 · May 31, 2012

  • Sahil M.

@Mohammad, I reckon a monopod is more suitable for these types of events.

    May 31, 2012

  • Sahil M.

Carolynn, contributing to the sweat make the events popular. My only advice is bring lots of patience, wait for the right spot. Usually most photographers of this group are kind enough to move out after taking their shoots.
There had been discussions in the past where we were told by the organisers that you should be able to talk to the models while shooting to make them pose you like, but I'm not too sure to what extent you will be able to interact with them. Good Luck it will be good fun.

Yep, just as Brent said. Hot and sweaty, but tonnes of fun. There isn't that much space to move around so its not advisable to bring a tripod. It's better off bring a fast lens (i.e. one with the biggest aperture possible) and a flash.
