  • Join us on this five day workshop while we explore the coasts, wildlife and lighthouses of the Outer Banks of North Carolina.  Donald Brown, Colin Hocking and David Culp have teamed up to share their knowledge of photography and this unique location.

Our journey will take us to Lake Mattamuskeet and surrounding lakes where we will take advantage of the winter resting areas for thousands of snow geese and many other water fowl. We will share the best the banks have to offer for coastal imagery including light houses, sand dunes, unique ocean conditions and the old rusted out boats of Wanchese.  Later we can attempt to locate the wild ponies of the northern outer banks in golden light (additional charges may apply) and if weather permits, we’ll venture out to take advantage of the area’s amazingly dark sky and photograph some unique nightscapes.

A detailed itinerary is not possible as we will have to match our locations to the ever changing weather conditions offered by the Outer Banks.  But having three experienced instructors will ensure all joining will have the personal attention necessary to capture the best imagery and allows us to break up into groups based on skill set, personal conditioning and desired shooting location. Our plan is to have ample time for onsite instruction as well as setting time aside for photo sharing, critiquing and discussion.

We will start our adventure on Wednesday evening the 25th of January and end after the sunrise shoot on the 29th. Workshop participants are responsible for their own lodging, meals and transportation. Car pooling will be encouraged and arranged once we have all gathered together. While you are welcome to stay anywhere you prefer, we have reserved a block of rooms in the Nags Head area and will forward these details to those who register.

Don’t miss this chance to break out your camera gear in the middle of winter to shoot this unique location, learn new techniques and try out the new gear Santa left you.

Activity level: Non-strenuous to Moderate (Grouped by personal conditioning)

As a member of the Travel Photography Club or Ballantyne Photography Club, you are entitled to a $50 discount which has already been reflected in this special price.

Sounds like a great trip! I'm a little confused on the hotel location. Are they between Nags Head and the Whalebone junction (Rts 12, 64 & 158)? The map link is showing the location near Rodanthe, Waves and Salvo.
