Check out the Douglas College music biz course for artists/songwriters. Anyone can register--you don't have to be in their music program to take it. Weekly evening classes happen at the New West campus. Going into its fifth year this Fall, it's all about learning what you need to know to really accelerate your career and survive and thrive in this business.
The course, which I instruct, is designed to teach you how to strategize your career and know when and how to take the appropriate steps. You will learn about who does what in the industry and how to establish and maintain strong working relationships; about contracts and protecting your interests; how to approach recording and music video projects with smarts; the ins and outs of publishing and copyright; important secrets to saving time and money; the many ways to make money and maximize your income; the digital scene and marketing in the digital age; gigging, touring, promotion and much, much more. Plus, you'll get the opportunity to have your music and promo material critiqued.
Cost is only about $10 an hour, and there's a much cheaper per-person rate for duos and bands. Anyone who misses any classes for any reason can make them up in a future semester.
This course is run by the college’s Community Music School. Registration is through the college’s Continuing Education department, by phone (604-527-5472) or in person (at the registrar’s office at either the New Westminster or Coquitlam campus).
