SIMON KENDALL Simon has spent over 40 years composing, performing and producing an eclectic array of music for concert performance, theatre, television, radio, cinema, and dance. In 1978 Simon got the call to join his old music buddies and transplanted Toronto graphic artist Doug Bennett in Vancouver’s upstart indie band ‘Doug and the Slugs’. This lead to 15 years as the band’s music director and goofy gargantuan keyboardist. They released 4 gold albums and performed from New York to the North Pole as one of the decade’s premier Canadian touring acts. Their independent 1979 single ‘Too Bad’ took the band by surprise, charting across the country and was reborn in 1999 as the theme song for NBC’S’ The Norm Show’. Since then, Simon has performed with numerous artists including Colin James, Cowboy Junkies, Jim Byrnes, Ridley Bent, Frazey Ford and Dalannah Gail Bowen. • Piano Solo House Concert & Wine, Themed “Impressions and Memories”

Cozy Living Room at UBC (Free Parkings Available)

Tickets ($25-30): https://www.mymusicfriends.com/concert/61 Come and enjoy some great classical music in a cozy living room with about 20 fellow music lovers. We will provide complimentary wine and appetizers. We at Music Friends (www.mymusicfriends.com) are pleased to introduce our audiences to dynamic pianist Barry Tan, a Vancouver native who is now pursuing doctoral studies with a full-ride scholarship at the University of Southern California (USC) in Los Angeles. We were impressed not just by the sensitivity and brilliance of his playing, but also for his well-rounded skills off the stage. Barry is, like us, an entrepreneurial minded person who always has new ideas on how to promote and program classical music. He's also a fantastic teacher - he coached a young chamber group to a top finish at the local Friends of Chamber Music competition just last year. And also like us, he's a huge fan of cats! For his Music Friends debut, Barry has prepared a stylistically diverse program themed around the idea of evoking memories, both in a literal and an abstract sense. Highlights will include Debussy and Albeniz's impressionistic evocations of Spain, as well as Rachmaninoff's intricate and thrilling Second Sonata, which is built around ideas that are recalled throughout the music. We hope you will enjoy the poetry and youthful energy that Barry will surely bring to this performance! DATE: May 10 (Friday) TIME: 7:00pm: Doors open. 7:30pm - 8:30pm: Performance, with brief spoken introductions for each piece 8:30pm - 9:30pm: Mingling over complimentary wine and snacks LOCATION: A cozy living room at UBC.
