1E/2E AD&D: Greyhawk Campaign

The party refreshed and ready for adventure leave the safety of Thunderhold in search of the Deep Dwarven Delve.  Lead by a longtime party friend, Jamie the Red - 5th level Ranger, the party heads out and of course Clavis Y. Ironhelm (aka Clavis Yapp 5th level mage/5th level fighter) comes along for conversation. They head north around the Mystic Mountains and then turn south towards Restenford on a 2-day journey.

It's cold outside and they encounter a pack of Yeti and after a long struggle overcome these great beasts.  They spot the tip top of the White Plume Mountain and turn West into the forest towards the delve.  Locating the trail, the ranger leads our heroes to the base of the mountain where the delve is located.  the elves keen eyesight verifies an entry point 80' ft up.  It is a flat stone outcropping.

They scale the mountain with the extremely useful assistance of the Paladin's Rope of Climbing and locate a great opening carved from the very bedrock of the mountain.  Here is where the battle to gain entry begins.  At first it was crossbow bolts hitting the half-elven 8th level Mage/3rd level Thief (Steven) from the darkness.  He responds with a fireball spell clearing the hallway well into its very core.

As the party moves into the mountain hallway they are met by a second barrage of bolts, and from the darkness comes waves of orcs.  As orcs fall to the strength of the party larger figures can be seen in the distance.  Another wave of orcs, followed by leaders, and ogres, and bugbears.  More spells are needed as magic missile and lightning bolts only thin the onrushing horde.

Then, the smallest of small red dots appears and tracks right into the heart of the party.  BAM!  A fireball doing 31 points of damage (failed save), 16 points (if saved), and less for those wearing a ring of fire resistance.  The 4th level Fighter/Mage (Julian falls).  Now the fighters charge, the healers perform triage.  Split, the party is fully engaged and the fighters are taking damage.

Next the final wave surrounds the Paladin (Tom) and the Mage/Thief (Steven).  There are orcs, bugbears, and a giant troll.  This troll is over 17ft' tall!  It does 120% more damage than a regular troll.  While in the back of the party a figure appears as he casts a web spell on the middle row (Ian, Scott, Chris, and Danielle).  The 5th level Cleric of Odin (Mario) rushes the evil Mage.  Failing a saving throw he is blinded by the light spell cast upon his eyes.  The healed Fighter/Mage (Julian) ignites the webs to free his companions, and the evil Mage parries for two rounds with dagger against Julian's short sword.  Then, winning initiative, the evil Mage runs away at a rate of speed never seen before.

With the battle won, and our heroes needing to regroup, they head to the entrance.  Then the Dwarven Fighter/Cleric (Gary) feels a crippling pain as he loses one point of strength...  Could this be the effects of the Geas spell as he moves away from his objective?

This is where we will begin.  See you all next Thursday!
