Take a one way trip from the depths of Piuma Rd to the heights of Stunt Rd, with a side trip to Saddle Peak thrown in for good measure. We'll meet at our ending point, on top of Stunt Rd, at the Lois Ewen Overlook, which offers valley views on one side, ocean views on the other, and sneak peek at our goal. After quickly arranging carpools, we'll drive down to the starting point, at the intersection of Las Virgenes/Malibu Canyon Rd and Piuma Rd.
Our journey takes us along one of the lesser-traveled sections of the famed Backbone Trail, rising up high enough to give us a good looked at Goat Buttes in Malibu Creek State Park, which are well known to anyone familiar with the opening credits of MASH. Oak and chaparral provide shade for much of the hike. Toward the end, the landscape opens up to a wide meadow, and Calabasas Peak looms into view.
After 7.8 miles and 2700' of elevation gain, we're back at our cars and ready for lunch.
The last stretch of road to the trailhead is twisting and slow, so give yourself enough time. Since carpools back down to the starting point need to be arranged on the fly, get there early.
The address above is the best I could do. It should show up at the right spot if you Google it, but I can't vouch for it with a GPS.
From Thousand Oaks: Take the 101 Freeway, exit on Las Virgenes Road and head south for 3 miles. Turn left on Mulholland Highway. Travel about 4 miles and turn right on Stunt Road. Continue to the top of Stunt Road, about 4 miles.
From the Valley & West LA: Take the 101 Freeway, exit Valley Circle/Mulholland Drive and go south on Mulholland for ½ mile, turn right on to Valmar Road which becomes Old Topanga Canyon Rd. Take a right on Mulholland Hwy and continue for about 3 miles and turn left onto Stunt Road. Continue up Stunt Road for 4 miles.
From PCH: Take Las Flores Canyon Rd to Rambla Pacifica St and turn right. Turn right on Schueren Rd until it deadends into Stunt Rd.
