First Hike After The Apocalypse! (Moderate Pace Damage Survey)

I will be away for the holidays and unable to attend the post-Apocalypse Hike...who knew when I scheduled it two years ago! Several people have expressed an interest in keeping the hike scheduled, so I will leave it up.

The plan is for this to be a moderate-paced and festive hike...we will all deserve a break and some fun after the tumult, after all. Please bring your favorite foods and beverages and plan for an extended stop high above the Pacific.

The hike will follow the Backbone Trail west to the spiral rocks near Corral Canyon and the sandstone formations just past them, and then return by the same route. Many people know this route, so everyone can play follow the leader(s).

On the way back, please remember to stay left at the fork to Puerco Canyon, and then to take the right onto the single-file trail to the parking lot near the end. Also, if you are parking at Piuma and crossing Malibu Canyon Road on foot, extra care please!

Will be there in spirit and thinking of you from my rural bunker!

Maybe ancient Mayan and current new-age prophecies predicting a collapse of the world in 2012 will prove true...

But if not, please join us for a first meetup of 2013. We will hike up to great views over the Pacific, have a lunch of leftover survival rations and other available food, and share our resolutions, plans, and hopes for life after the apocalypse.

Here is info on our scheduled hike…hope to see you there!

Malibu Canyon to Mesa Peak and Beyond
Hike Type: Adventure
Level: Advanced beginner to Intermediate
Route Type: Up & back
Distance: 10 miles
Elevation gain: 2000 feet
Terrain: Trail & fire road

Route summary:

Our hike will take us 10 miles roundtrip on one of the most beautiful parts of the 60-mile Backbone Trail, which runs through the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area from Will Rogers State Park in the east to Point Mugu in the west. The section we will be on is also called the Mesa Peak Motorway.

The route begins at Malibu Canyon Road and proceeds westerly roughly 2.5 miles and 1500 feet up to a long ridgeline that leads to and past Mesa Peak, with spectacular Pacific views. The terrain is a mix of single and double-file trail and open fire road. Unless martial law has been declared, we will add an additional 2.5 miles of traverse and sight-seeing along the Backbone Trail, until reaching the rock and cave formations near Corral Canyon Road, adding roughly 300 feet of elevation gain. My hope is that the caves will be free of armed survivalists by the time of our hike, but we will adjust our route as needed.

The initial section of our hike is wooded and shaded, but the route quickly gives way to open hillsides and ridgelines. Since we begin on the floor of Malibu Canyon and reach exposed areas above the Pacific, weather can range from calm and humid to misty with ocean winds to quite warm and dry conditions. We will stop at the endpoint of our traverse and return by the same route, adding a final 500 feet of elevation gain.

Please wear – brush-resistant pants, one or more wicking shirts appropriate to the temperature, comfortable hiking shoes or light boots, your favorite undergarments and accessories, and a light backpack.

Please bring – at least two liters of water, snacks, an extra layer of clothing, a charged cell phone, identification, a headlamp, a small first-aid kit, bug repellant and sunscreen, a waterproof shell if rain is forecast, and any medications or anything else you might need on the trail.

There is a CA State parking lot at the trailhead, which charges $10 if you do not have a pre-paid pass.

There is also free parking at a dirt lot 1/4 mile from the trailhead, at the corner of Piuma Road and Malibu Canyon Road. If you park there, please mind the sometimes heavy traffic while walking to the trailhead.

Please do not leave anything of value in your car, at this or any other trailhead.

From the 101 - Exit Las Virgenes Road and head south. Go approximately 5 miles to Piuma Road. Continue 1/4 mile past Piuma, and you'll see the State parking area/trailhead on the right. (Las Virgenes Road becomes Malibu Canyon Road at Piuma).

From the PCH - Take Malibu Canyon Road north ~4.5 miles. The State parking area will be on the left.
