Wildwood Park in Thousand Oaks is one of the most versatile local parks there is, with 27 miles of trails skittering through rocky cliffs, cacti-filled desert environs, volcanic rock, riparian forest, and a cool, watery canyon. Highlights of the hike include a 40' waterfall, Indian caves, volcanic rock cliffs, and wildflowers throughout. We'll hike through desert, meadow, and woodland environments at various points along the way. Wildwood's archetypal western look served as the set for The Rifleman, Gunsmoke, and Wagon Train back in the day, as well as the movie Spartacus.

We are going to take a new route today. Our lollipop route will be approximately 5.25 miles, with 800'' of elevation gain. The middle section of the hike is shaded, but the beginning and end are exposed- dress appropriately, wear hats and sunscreen, and make sure you have water.

Some areas are rocky and/or loose, so bring your hiking poles if you favor them.

The photo of the falls is from after a storm in 2010. I thought you'd find the comparison between this and what you'll see on the hike interesting.

This is a gentler hike. We will go at a more moderate pace than a regular Trailblazer hike, and we'll take more breaks. The purpose is to give novice and intermediate hikers who may feel they're not up to a regular hike a chance to get out and experience our beautiful trails. Faster hikers are welcome to come along, with the understanding that the hike is geared toward those who want to go at an easier pace.

From the 101 in Thousand Oaks, turn north on Lynn Road and continue 2.6 miles to Avenida De Los Arboles, then turn left. Continue for about a mile to the end and turn into the Wildwood parking lot on the left.

From the 118, travel west to the 23, exit at Avenida De Los Arboles and turn right. Drive further than you remember having to drive to this trailhead (10 or 15 minutes). Turn left into the parking lot when the road ends.

Watch for cross traffic coming from the right when you turn into the parking lot- they don't have to stop. Parking is ample and free.

The hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends.
