Join us for a very strenuous hike to Buzzard's Roost. Many of us have hiked to Buzzard's Roost from Newton Canyon trailhead but this new hike is more difficult. We will start from the Edison Fire Road trailhead, which is one mile south of the Newton Canyon trailhead. From the trailhead we will climb 500 feet to the east edge of the Zuma drainage, and the descend to the bottom of Zuma canyon-a shady boulder filled wash surrounded by sycamore oaks and willows. Zuma canyon is one of the deepest and most pristine canyons in the Santa Monica Mountains. Along the way the trail offers great views of the Pacific Ocean, coastline of Point Dume and Zuma Beach, and the local islands.

We will cross the stream and climb up to the Zuma Ridge trail. We will take the Zuma Ridge trail to Buzzard's Roost, where we will take a break and enjoy the views of Malibu, the ocean and the offshore Islands.

After a short break, we will take the same route back to the cars. We will drop back down into Zuma canyon. After crossing the stream, a vigorous 1000 foot climb takes us back to the ridge with a final descend to the trailhead. This 1000 foot climb will feel like 5000 feet and you will probably be saying some bad things about the hike leaders (photo below shows steep road out of Zuma Canyon).

This hike will be a very challenging 12.5 miles with 3500 feet of elevation gain. It's probably one of hardest half-day hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains. It will be an out and back hike so if you can't make it to Buzzard's Roost, you can either turnaround at anytime or wait for us to return, and everyone needs to know the route before the hike starts.

Parking: Free parking is available at our meet-up location.

Please do not leave anything of value in your car, at this or any other trailhead.

From the 101 – Exit at Kanan Road and drive south (toward the ocean) 9.0 miles, going through the three tunnels on this road (which changes name to Kanan Dume Road). You will pass the Newton Canyon Backbone trailhead just before tunnel number 3. Do not park there. The parking area for the Zuma Edison trailhead is approximately 1 mile south of the third tunnel. The parking area is on the right hand side of the road. There will be a gate at the trailhead and a call box with numbers "N9 107" at the bottom.

From PCH – Turn up South Kanan Dume Road. Drive 3.4 miles from PCH. There will be a dirt parking area in front of the trailhead gate on the left. If you pass through the first tunnel, you went too far. Turn around and follow the directions in the previous paragraph ("from the 101"). There will be a gate at the trailhead and a call box with numbers "N9 107" at the bottom.

The hike host is a volunteer and not responsible for the group. Safety should be a priority for everyone in the group. Please treat this meet-up as hiking with a group of friends. If you become fatigued and unable to continue the hike, it is expected you will advise the hike host of this and return to our starting point on your own. If you are able to proceed, it is expected that you will maintain line of sight with other members of the group at all times and help to promote the group’s safety and fitness goals.
