Needs a location
From the top, we'll have a 360-degree view of the Conejo Valley and Santa Monica Bay, from Sandstone Peak to the west, Simi Valley to the north (bring your binoculars!), Ladyface and Mt Baldy to the east (binoculars not needed), and the Channel Islands to the south and south-west. The route will take us along the newest (opened in late 2007) and third newest sections of the Backbone Trail.
The trail from Encinal is a smooth, firm and well-travelled singletrack, climbing, swooping and winding with a constant and gentle slope for 3.6 miles, gaining about 830' of elevation. We'll have great views of the coast for much of the way. From there we travel 0.3 miles on the slightly steeper Etz Meloy Motorway, then the last tenth of a mile is up a trail to the peak where we'll experience the above-mentioned 360-degree view.
When we're done, we turn around and retrace our path to the cars. Since this is an out-and-back hike with no forks in the trail, slower hikers can go at their own pace and turn back when they've had enough.
You can see photos of my first hike here on this photo gallery page (http://www.venturacountytrails.org/RecentPhotos/2008-02-10EtzMeloyBackboneSingletrack/_Page.html).
