Learn about molecular biology, growing algae and a DNA modification

Each week we spend 15-20 minutes learning about DNA, RNA, proteins, the makeup of the cell, how DNA is modified through synthetic biology, and wet lab techniques.  When we accumulate enough equipment and finalize a location with a sink, we'll set up our wet lab to conduct experiments to genetically modify bacteria and algae for a range of interests.

We are also working on building algae bioreactors and electronic sensors to monitor the growth and physical characteristics of algae.

Finally, we'll study reviewed scientific papers to learn about the exciting work currently conducted at professional labs around the world.

Come join in the fun!

Hi folks, Catherine and Cameron cannot attend tonight, so we're having a short Spirulina workshop instead. I'll provide samples of fresh spirulina culture to anyone interested along with information on how to grow and harvest it at home. Please bring your own small water bottle for culture if you have it, I'll have a limited supply of algae to distribute. All the information and more that we will cover is available here:
    http://www.algaelab.org/

Information on how to make Spirulina media from scratch at home is posted on our Google groups website here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/wet-lab-san-diego-diybio/protocols-lab-book-sops/ySLDo6kRQs4
