Meetup Seventy Nine: Gunnar's Daughter
Hey team - This month we're reading the short novel by the Norwegian novelist Sigrid Undset, called Gunnar's Daughter. While published in 1909, the setting is 11th century Norway and Iceland, and follows the tragic, violent relationship between Vigdis Gunnarsdatter and the man she had hoped to love. After being raped by him and mothering the child produced from that rape, Vigdis must establish her autonomy and rebuild her life. Although set in Nordic medieval times, the novel explores themes prevalent today, like rape and revenge, civil and domestic violence, troubled marriages, and children made victims of their parents' problems. *Warning: As mentioned this story depicts rape and its aftermath, so choose to read at your own discretion.

What we're about

This is book club for people who want to catch up on their modern classics such as Lolita, Catch-22 and On the Road. Book choices will be from the 20th century and on. We have a good group going so far, members coming from all over NYC. You do not have to live in Williamsburg to join! This is simply where the meet-ups will tend to be.
