What we're about

Hey team - I'm excited to open up our Book Club to the world at large again, and what better way to do it than with our traditional Halloween meetup! While we do cover Classic Modern Lit as a rule, an exception is made for our Meetup near Halloween where we read stories firmly within the horror genre. So to get our spook on we'll be reading some scary stories set in the depths of the wilderness dark and scary...where no one can hear you scream!
The first two stories are by Algernon Blackwood, an English author and one of the most prolific ghost story writers from the early 20th century. Both stories center around people facing mysterious circumstances in the wilderness.
1. The Willows by Algernon Blackwood (1907) - https://www.gutenberg.org/cache/epub/11438/pg11438-images.html
2. The Wendigo by Algernon Blackwood (1910) - https://www.gutenberg.org/files/10897/10897-h/10897-h.htm
The last story is the novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell, Jr. Published in 1938, the story "...follows a group of people trapped in an Antarctic research outpost with shapeshifting alien monsters able to absorb and imitate any living being." Sound familiar? It's the ultimate inspiration for John Carpenter's The Thing.
- This is in our first official Meetup back I'm limiting the RSVP to 10 spots. If things go well then I'll bump up the number in the coming months. **If you RSVP and you can't make it, then please cancel your RSVP so someone else can take your spot!
- By the end of October it'll most likely be too cold to sit outside so we'll be inside. Only RSVP if you're fully vaccinated. The bar will check for proof.
