Meetup Thirty Two: Hunger

Hey team - I've made an executive decision to go with one of the runner-ups from our last poll, Knut Hamsun's Hunger, an engaging view of human psychology explored through the meanderings of a twenty-something intellectual and his search for subsistence in the modern day metropolis of Oslo. Famously known for an episode in which the protagonist contemplates eating his own pencil as he grows more overwhelmed with hunger, the novel has deep philosophical overtones which draw into question the individual's relation to society, morality, and God. Definitely some interesting topic for discussion to be garnered from this work, hope to see you all there

I think I read once that Harold Bloom called the Lyngstad the definitive modern translation, but I'm not entirely sure.

I'm just going to play it safe and become fluent in Norwegian in 3 weeks.

There seems to be some debate about which translation is better, the one by Sverre Lyngstad or the one by Robert Bly.. does anyone have have advice about which to go for?

My copy is Bly - I'd go for whatever you can get your hands on, not sure which translation is better
