Meetup Twenty Six: Island

Hey team - wanted to get everyone on board before the holiday weekend - the book for the next modern lit meetup is Aldous Huxley's (much) lesser known novel Island. Defined as a counterpoint to Brave New World, this work contrasts some of the concepts seen in his earlier novel - drug use, contraception, mysticism, politics, overpopulation, spiritualism - but against the backdrop of a Utopian society living on an isolated island. It's definitely a thought provoking work which will provide ample opportunity for discussion, especially if you bring the contrast of the two works into the mix. Hopefully you've all brushed up on your Brave New World since high school...

Also - bonus points for the book in that it inspired a hippie commune in Mexico that had LSD as one of its core practices - founded by Timothy Leary no less! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zihuatanejo_Project)
