July Book Discussion- Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Well I flew home to Chicago yesterday, where I watched the Blackhawks take the Stanley Cup Finals game 1 against Boston in a triple overtime extravaganza.  Exactly like that scenario, was our poll race between Tender is the Night and Lolita, which were each tied at 11 votes when I went to close the poll Wednesday Night.  I let it resume until morning, but since it was still tied I decided (from Sara's great idea) that in cases where the poll runs long and there is a tie, the hosting member gets the tie-breaking vote- so Sara emailed me her tie-breaker vote this morning, and her hosting selection is going to be Tender is the Night by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

But don't you worry Lolita fans, there's always next month :)

Ha, so yeah the book is 28th on Modern Library's top 100 list, and just about everyone has read Gatsby- so this is sure to lead to an amazing discussion; mostly in part because we're all such amazing and people, and virtually nothing to do with the brilliance that is his writing ;)

Get it, read it, and let's talk some literature on the 7th!   Meeting at Trails Cafe again, but be sure to arrive on time because we're going to venture off somewhere for the actual discussion.

Have a great month, a safe 4th, and see you soon.

-Brock.

Great second meeting everyone- I think we all agree that the discussion made the read so much more worthwhile- let's keep that up going into the third meeting where we will be discussing an amazing novel! As discussed, from this month forward I'm going to select an enthusiastic member to lead the discussion, picking both the book and the place. This month is going to be Sara Greenfield, and she wants to do Tender is the Night by Fitzgerald, Light in August by Faulkner, and Lolita by Nabokov- three fantastic reads I'm sure. Go the poll page and vote for the one you'd like to read most (wink, wink: most people seemed excited about Fitzgerald...but don't let that sway you!)- I'm going to close the poll Wednesday Night/Thursday morning so everyone has time to get the book and read it by the date.

Since it was awesome and convenient at Griffith Park, we're going to meet at the same place, Griffith Park near the Trails Cafe, but this time we're going to venture off somewhere because what is life without adventure.

Also- I'm starting a discussion page where we can share musings, insights, short stories, poems, or anything you write or come across that you think is worth sharing to the group.  Check it out under the "DISCUSSIONS" tab and feel free to post whatever!

So yeah, go vote on the poll page, and when the book is selected I'll update the event info!

Really enjoyed the discussion yesterday. Sara, you did a great job steering the discussion! I'd like to suggest 'The Master and Margarita' by Mikhail Bulgakov for the next one. It's been on my list for a while now ;)

Oh, I have been dying to read that one, too! It's already on my Kindle (with those other ten books awaiting me). I hope it comes up in one of the lists soon. It's good to know I've got another fan of Russian lit in the group! For the next meeting, though, I believe Sarah (with an H) is hosting and is doing a female authors theme. She's got a great list for us to choose from!

So, since I'm hosting book club tomorrow, I just wanted to remind everyone that we are meeting at 2:30pm in Griffith Park at the Trails Cafe. Because I feel like that's what a host does, right? I will try to be at the same table we had last time, which was in the shade underneath a giant awning with 2 picnic tables behind the cafe, but if I'm not there I will probably be somewhere else in the shade with my book so look around. I will be the one who looks like me. I also wanted to remind you guys that we will most likely be moving around to a different spot in the park, so bring a blanket to lounge on and be on time so you don't miss us! See you guys tomorrow for some awesome discussion.

Just in case we are late (not planning on it), is there someone we can text to get the new location?

      July 6, 2013

    • Sara G

I think I will probably just update our final location and how to get there right here on this site. So if you don't see us at the meeting spot, check back here for directions and to find out where we ended up. Or, if it works out like last time, we might just stick around the cafe. We'll play it by ear, but I will definitely keep you posted on our status either way. Thanks for checking about that!

Where is the poll page? Is it on available by desktop? I am on my phone.

Seriously, watching Tender is the Night and Lolita neck and neck in the poll is far more interesting than anything I'm doing at work today.

AAAAAAAAAAAAA. Darn it. I keep missing these due to 1) I don't finish the books on time 2) I'm not getting the day off. Patootie mcfruity.
