A Visit to the Fabulous Hillwood Estate in DC for Gay Day!

Gay Day at Hillwood

Marjorie Merriweather Post bought Hillwood in 1955 and soon decided her home would be a museum that would inspire and educate the public. When she left her northwest Washington, D.C. estate, she endowed the country with the most comprehensive collection of Russian imperial art outside of Russia, a distinguished 18th-century French decorative art collection, and twenty-five acres of serene landscaped gardens and natural woodlands for all to enjoy. Opened as a public institution in 1977, today Hillwood's allure stems from the equally fascinating parts that make up the whole. From the captivating life of Marjorie Post to the exquisitely maintained Mansion and Gardens, the experience of Hillwood outshines even the Fabergé Eggs.

Hillwood proudly welcomes the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender communities. Join us in September for a day of festive celebration, presented each year since 2001 and supported by Hillwood’s GLBT Advisory Committee.

Marjorie Merriweather Post's tradition of opening her home to visitors for grand entertaining is the backdrop for Gay Day. Traditionally beginning with a Family Garden Party with games, picture books, and hands-on fun entertain, breakfast treats are served on the Lunar Lawn with Rainbow Families DC.

An Afternoon of Fashion, Flowers, and Entertainment

In the afternoon, all the elements of beauty and cordiality that characterized Post’s life at Hillwood are on display for Gay Day. Post’s passion for finely-crafted and exquisite objects extended to her landscape and orchid collection. Head of Greenhouse and Design Operations, Jason Gedeik, gives a presentation about Post’s love of orchids using evocative archival images and fascinating stories of how she incorporated them into her luxurious lifestyle. Visitors can also watch as Gedeik recreates a magnificent floral arrangement based on a photograph of one of Post’s historic centerpieces—with an abundance of flowers from the Cutting Garden, which is in magnificent bloom in September. Behind-the-scenes views into rooms and spaces not usually accessible to the public, including the dumbwaiter, game closet, snooze room, and massage room, provide a glimpse into the facets that made Post’s sophisticated lifestyle possible. Liana Paredes, curator of Prêt-a-Papier, will lead guests through the magical and immersive experience of working with de Borchgrave and her studio in putting together this singular and stunning ensemble of French 18th century court gowns, Russian costumes, and exquisitely artistic early 20th-century dresses all made out of paper.

Gallery talks enlighten visitors about the collections, while performances from groups such as the Rock Creek Singers of Gay Men’s Chorus of Washington and DC Lambda Squares showcase the contributions of our community partners. Wrap up the day with Punch on the Portico, a sociable toast to the GLBT community.

Cost is $15, $12 seniors, $10 members & college student, free for children under 18.

Afterwards, we will have dinner at a local eatery in DC (suggestions anyone?); also, post a comment if you are interested in car pooling.

A lovely, lovely day. Beautiful place, an unexpected treat of the Gay Men's choir and of course the company can't be beat - especially when we get a rebate at dinner!

Siam House Thai restaurant is just over 1 mile from Hillwood. Since the mansion is in a largely residential area, Siam may be about as close as we'll get to a restaurant. Not to mention we love Thai!! Hillwood's cafe seems to have a fairly limited menu. Just a thought...

What are the transportation plans for Saturday. I have a car that can take four plus me very comfortably and I am familiar with driving in DC.
