Under the Tuscan Sun - Wine 35 and up Dinner and a Movie

I know its a repeat... but I felt like doing Italian food so Italian wine it is. Bring an Italian wine 35 and up and a dish to share. If you are bringing a guest please bring 2 bottles of wine and 2 dishes. Also we will talk about the wines and taste them in order.

The tasting format was very different from what I have been accustumed to but it worked. We had a whole range of experience levels and the melding of those experience levels really worked.

In the future I have some ideas about doing a similar tasting featuring well aged French Burgundies compared to current available Pinot Noir from CA and WA. The same for French Bordeaux and current US and Austrailian Cabernet.

BTW I should have stayed around last night and helped clean and put away things. Great people and frankly I was surprised at the quality level of the Itanlian wines. I won't be buying any - way too many US and Austrailan cabs out there and of course real champagne.

Thank all of you - the education and life experience levels were incredible. A great melange of people, wine and food.

    March 28, 2014

    • Tami H.

Richard I really would appreciate Italian wine 35 and up... that may be a nice wine but its going to mess w/ palates with the Italian wines... maybe sometime we'll do Spanish wines but this one is Italian and we want to learn about all things Italian the cheesecake sounds great though

Matt is doing 2006 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino... figured we'd have to have King (Brunello) and Queen (Amarone) of Italian wines there tomorrow

Blake inspired me to raid the cellar for old vintages... one article said this was the best year ever... and priced the 1995 at 150 and the 1997 at 45 but I have the 1988 which one article said is the best year ever... so Corte Vecchia 1988 Amarone della Valpolicella - going to give Matt a few choices on his but I get the 1988 as mine to share - it has been stored well in our cellar for years so it should be good

Tami - that was me. Thanks because the place I planned to get it no longer offers Cannoli. I know exactly where it is located because it is located near my favorite restaurant in Milton - Milton Restaurant. Great wine list also - the Roederer which is great - has a peach flavor.

Am really looking forward to this event - I will bring lots of pasta and sauce. Sorry it is not putanesca - had to go out and buy the ingredients - check out putanesca and it's history. Cannoli has an equally interesting background - at least for me.

    March 26, 2014

    • Tami H.

Cool I assume they still have it

      March 27, 2014

  • butch b.

Sorry - should have said Alpine Bakery - just like grandmom used to make back in the old county. Just kidding - my granny was Irish and the world revolved around potatoes.

    March 26, 2014

  • Tami H.

Someone had asked me and I think my mail is eating my mail... about where to get Cannoli... sorry I can't find your email to respond.. I know Publix and Fresh Market have it.. but the only place I know that make Cannoli like you would have in Italy is Alpine Bakery I bought a cake from them one time after someone brought the most amazing cannoli I've ever had from Alpine Bakery it was a few years ago but I bet they still have it. The cake was amazing also it was a strawberries and whipping creme cake and our guest all thought it was to die for,

Does anyone grind their own coffee? Let me know who does and I will bring some of my freshly roasted Yemeni Mokha Ishmaili which I think is the best coffee in the world.

    March 25, 2014

    • Tami H.

We do and we can even serve some that night

      March 25, 2014

  • Blake C.

Hi Tami. Would you like an Italian white to go with the inevitable reds (although we will bring a red as well). I'm thinking Greco di Tufo. I'll have a hard time spending $35 on a white but I can average it out on the red.

    March 25, 2014

    • Tami H.

I'm good with that. We will serve a white reception wine but nothing fancy.

      March 25, 2014

    • Tami H.

So glad you all are coming

      March 25, 2014

  • Tami H.

FYi I am providing a organic green salad and some type of main dish in addition to a reception wine and of course Matt and I are each doing an Italian of 35 or over we are waiting to see what holes need to be filled for wine first as we have at least 4 that are appropriate.

    March 25, 2014

  • Charlie A.

Matt and Tami...am bringing an organic Italian wine,
Antica Enotria Nero Di Troia 2008, an IGT from Puglia.

    March 25, 2014

  • Carol N.

Tami, I'm bringing a Super Tuscan called Regina di Renieri, 2009. Not sure what food I'm going to bring.

    1 · March 24, 2014

  • butch b.

Went to Costco today and bought a Barolo - Antiche Cantine dei Marchesi di Barolo 2008. I know nothing of Italian wine identification but hope this is a good one. I will also bring a bottle of Moet Chandon and also a bottle of 1971 Suderaut Sauterne. I have had both the latter and they are not Italian but are very good wines. I will also bring my own home made pasta sauce and Barilla pasta. Hope no one is offended about me bringing a couple of French wines.

    1 · March 17, 2014

    • Tami H.

also Matt and I love Barolos may serve one ourselves we can't decide yet

      March 23, 2014

    • Tami H.

also Butch I've got some Maytag Blue Cheese I'll put out to pair w/ the Sauterne remind me ;-)
