Beginner Caving Academy

The Oregon High Desert Grotto (Bend's local caving club) is sponsoring a beginner caving academy to help people learn about caving and cave conservation. There will be experienced cavers there to talk about cave geology, biology, equipment and techniques. The group will visit several caves south of Bend including at least one gated cave currently closed to public visitation (Skeleton Cave). Any vehicle will be able to make the trip. Participants will need gloves, sturdy shoes, at least 3 lights (1 helmet mounted), spare batteries, and a helmet. Climbing helmets are best but bicycle helmets are acceptable. The caves will be cool, so warm, durable clothing is recommended. Please contact me if you have questions. The 10th and 11th are repeats of the same event. Please only sign up for one date to allow room for others.

Curt and I had a fabulous time! Neil is an excellent trip leader: the logistics were seamless, and his talks about the geology were first rate. Neil, Kara, Dave and Jeff (thanks, Jeff, for the literal "leg up" getting out of Bat Cave) were all extremely patient with us being slower than the rest of the group. They were all very attentive to safety, including spotting us on a 7-foot vertical drop. They genuinely want to encourage newbies to get into caving. We have already joined the OR High Desert Grotto. Now we have to buy some overalls! Thanks for a great day and a new activity!

Thank you for all the kind comments. Glad you all had a great time. If caving is something you really want to do more of, consider joining the grotto too. We have two more trips this month well suited to beginners. We average 2-3 trips a month into the Fall. Get in touch with me or join on our website.

Hi Neil, I came down with a bad cold so, WAH, I won't be joining you. Hope you host another caving event in the future. Bruce will be out skiing tomorrow.

    Have fun.

And the event will probably run to 4pm, with options to leave around noon.

You might want to bring a beanie for under your helmet.
