The Struggle Switch. Our Thinking Self created it by telling us that uncomfortable feelings are "bad" or "dangerous", that we can't cope with them, that we are defective or damaged for having them, that they will take over and overwhelm us, or that they will harm us in some way. If we fuse with these stories, the switch goes on and we perceive uncomfortable emotions as a threat. It activates the fight-or-flight response, which then gives rise to a whole new set of unpleasant feelings. Russ Harris. ------ The big misconception that is created by this perspective is that we need to do something about these uncomfortable emotions to get rid of them. Within the perspective of ACT we learn to watch the emotion come, " build in intensity" then go, without it pushing us around. A very useful skill. We might need to do something about a situation, that's fine, but acting out just to eliminate an uncomfortable emotion is almost always disappointing. From the ACT perspective their are many tried and true ways of bringing about this most useful skill of making friends with all of our emotions. Join the inquiry!
We are excited to announce that the Insight Group is beginning a new journey into a topic which encompasses individual physical, mental and spiritual practices, as well as the study of a philosophy that extends beyond the individual and into the collective experiences of all cultures, religions, races, and ethnicities, to help us to understand how we interact together in this grand world.
During our meetings we will be introducing "Integral" ideas through readings, video presentations, and lively discussions, as well as learning individual practices that can help us to live more fully. One of the best ways to inform you of what it is all about is to direct you to the awesome website of the Integral movement at integrallife.com. For more in depth study of both the overriding philosophy and Integral Life Practice itself, you can go to amazon and read about the main book that we will be using, Integral Life Practice by Ken Wilber. For those who love to read philosophy, Ken Wilbur has many books which expound on this thought in almost every area of life, including politics, religion, etc and is even brave enough to introduce his overall "Theory of Everything".
Join us as we inquire into and practice a perspective that brings all thing together in a way that is meaningful, inspiring, and life affirming! See you soon!
