Cultural Immersion in VIETNAM and CAMBODIA

Hi uDarers! Are you free sometime between November 2016- January 2017? If you want to immerse yourself in two of the oldest cultures in Southeast Asia, discover outstanding landscapes and fascinating cultures and customs and indulge yourself in a paradise full of traditional cuisine that will leave your taste buds bursting full of exotic flavours, then join us in this exotic experience while you meet new travel buddies. DAY 1: Hanoi Arrival Meals: None Welcome to Vietnam! Arrival to Hanoi Noi Bai Airport, Check-in at the hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Overnight at Icon 36 Hotel, Superior room. DAY 2: Hanoi – Explore Hanoi like a local Meals: B L This morning we will visit Hoan Kiem Lake. It is a cultural thing in Vietnam to wake up very early and start the morning with some exercise. It is very interesting to see how the local people, mostly women from varying age, start their busy routine. Several groups of people can be found practicing tai chi and aerobics. Be part of Vietnam and join the locals in their morning routine! After visiting the Ngoc Son Temple, located in the middle of the Hoan Kiem Lake, we will visit a traditional, local and charming coffee place, where you will be able to try Vietnam’s local coffee: Cà phê sữa đá (Iced coffee) and if you feel more adventurous, you can also try the ‘Egg coffee’! After our coffee, we will continue walking and we will stop in a street food place, where you will try the delicious ‘bánh mì’ –typical baguette sandwich filled in with a variety of things!-. Later, we will get deep into Hanoi’s Old Quarter and you will start a walking tour where you will be able to witness the French architecture in different Vietnamese buildings. Our first stop will be the St. Joseph Cathedral, a French gothic building constructed in 1886. Next, we will walk just 10 minutes until we arrive to the Hoa Lo Prison, where Vietnamese as well as American and French prisoners of war used to be imprisoned. To finish our morning, we will pay a visit to the Huu Tiep Lake, better known as ‘B-52 lake’, where US B-5 bomber wreckage can be seen. At noon, we will return to the Old Quarter. Vietnam is very well known for its food, so we will stop at a ‘Bún Chả’ restaurant, where you will try Hanoi’s specialty. After our super local lunch, we will visit the Temple of Literature, built in 1076. Vietnam’s first university was established within this temple to educate Vietnam's royalty, mandarins and members of the elite. The university functioned for 700 years and its gardens and well-preserved architecture offer a fascinating glimpse into Vietnam’s past. Our last stop of the day will be in Hanoi railway tracks. This is something very particular from this city as the railway tracks are sometimes located meters away from entrance door of houses! Together with our guide, you will walk along the railway tracks and take some of the most beautiful pictures of the city. After a long day, we will finish with evening beers at the typical and well known Bia Hoi, where you will taste local draft beer; finishing the day as a local! Along the tour, you will be trying different street specialties therefore we recommend avoiding breakfast at the hotel this day! Overnight at Icon 36 Hotel, Superior room. Day 3: Hanoi – Nam Cang Riverside Lodge Meals: B L D We will commence from our hotel with Topas Mountain Express for a 5 hours transfer to the mountain town of Sapa. After having lunch in Sapa town at our own expense, we will have a transfer to the trekking point near Hau Thao village. Trekking is the best activity to enjoy the beautiful nature and get in touch with the unique culture of Sapa. The 2.5 hour trek today is on the trails running through a pure and beautiful mountainous area, home to Black H’mong minority. Some parts of the trek are a little bit challenging with steep ascents, but as compensation, we will enjoy the breathtaking views of towering mountains and paddling rice terraces valleys. We will visit the two villages of Hang Da and Hau Chu Ngai and be charmed by the unmixed culture of the Black H’mong minority, who has special skills in making agricultural tools, wooden furniture, musical instruments and jewelry. They are also famous for their hemp production and indigo dying. We then have another transfer to the remote village of Nam Cang, where we enjoy dinner and stay overnight in your comfort room at the homestay Nam Cang Riverside Lodge. Overnight Nam Cang Riverside Lodge. Day 4:Nam Cang Riverside Lodge – Hill top Bungalow Meals: B L D We will wake up to the sound of the river and maybe happy minority kids swimming near the lodge. And maybe you would like your breakfast served at the big river front terrace and a beautiful morning view. Today our hike will take you higher up in the mountains, the trails are only used by local farmers and we will need to cross a few rivers before visiting a very remote Red Dao village of Nam Ngan. Our small group can enter a house and see the living conditions in the deep mountains, maybe we will be served a cup of tea or an optional rice wine as hospitality is important to all. Now the trail will decent into a bigger path and soon you will be in My Son, the village of one of the smallest tribes in this area, the Xa Pho minority. After a local lunch we will end our remote hike near the beautiful Muong Bo River, where your vehicle is waiting for your journey to hilltop located Topas Ecolodge. From your bungalow’s balcony, you may enjoy your aerial view over the mountainous area where you have just been to. Overnight at Topas Ecolodge, Deluxe Bungalow. Day 5: Sapa – Hanoi Meals: B The morning is at our leisure at Topas Ecolodge. We can either relax or borrow free of charge mountain bikes from the lodge for an exploration to the neighboring villages. We can also take a scheduled shuttle bus to Sapa to visit the town. At 14:00, Topas Mountain Express departs from Topas Ecolodge, pick us up if we are in Sapa town, and return you to Hanoi. Overnight at Icon 36 Hotel, Superior room. Day 6: Hanoi – Halong Bay Meals: B L D After an early breakfast, we will depart for Ha Long Bay, one of the most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Areas and the world’s largest marine limestone ‘karts’ landscape. After a 3.5 hour drive towards North East of Hanoi, we will embark at Hon Gai International harbor, on board Indochina Dragon’s Pearl Junk. A refreshing welcome drink will be served and we can check into our cabin. As you settle into our cabin, the boat will set sail to the magnificent Bai Tu Long Bay. Lunch will be served in the restaurant while you enjoy the amazing scenery. Around 3 pm, we will explore the well-hidden Thien Canh Son Cave Located in the centre of the World Heritage area, Bai Tu Long Bay covers an area of 2000 square meters, Thien Canh Son Cave offers a wild and mysterious beauty. The pathway to Thien Canh Son Cave is set below the forest canopy and a stone cliff, so we will have the feeling they are climbing towards heaven. Next, we will enjoy on a white sandy beach at Hon Co Island, swimming or kayaking. As the sun sets over the bay, we head back to the cruise and relax. Dinner will be served with local seafood and then you can choose to enjoy a drink from the bar or experience squid fishing, before going to bed. *Transfer by Shuttle bus operated by Indochina Junk Overnight on Prince Junk – Indochina Junk. Day 7: Vung Vieng Fishing Village – Hon Gai Harbor – Hanoi – Danang Meals: B Enjoy the morning view of Bay’s landscape with a cup of tea or coffee, and have breakfast in the fresh air. Next, we will visit Vung Vieng fishing village by a rustic row-boat, meet the local people and pass through the floating school and fish farms. Lunch will be served on the boat as we near the harbor. At noon, we will get back to the Hon Gai Harbor where our shuttle bus will be waiting you to take us back to your hotel in Hanoi. We will arrive around 16:30pm/17pm to our hotel and we will transfered to the airport for evening flight to Danang. Transfer to our hotel in Hoi An for overnight stay. *Transfer by Shuttle bus operated by Indochina Junk Overnight Thuy Duong 3 Hotel, Superior room. Day 8: Hoi An – Walking tour Meals: B This morning, we will start a walking tour through this charming small town made of hundreds of historic houses, congregation halls, pagodas and other structures. Its buildings and its streets reflect the indigenous and foreign influences this town had, defining it as a unique heritage and multi-cultural site. There’s plenty to see in this delightful town, such as the Japanese Covered Bridges, the Pottery Museum, the 200 years old Tan Ky House, Chua Ong Pagoda and the vibrant local market. We will visit all of them in this walking tour. Overnight Thuy Duong 3 Hotel, Superior room. Day 9: Hoi An – Danang – Ho Chi Minh city Meals: B After breakfast, we will take our flight to Ho Chi Minh City. Then, we will head towards the War Museum, one of Vietnam’s most popular museums which primarily exhibit the American phase of the Vietnam War. Then, we will visit the Reunification Palace, former residence of the presidents of South Vietnam before 1975. Next, you will visit the Notre Dame Cathedral and the Post Office. Overnight Asian Ruby Select Hotel, Superior room. Day 10: Ho Chi Minh City – Cu Chi Tunnels Meals: B A morning drive will take us to visit the famous Cu Chi tunnels. The tunnels are 75 km northwest of Ho Chi Minh City, in an area that played an important role during Vietnam's wars for independence and reunification. More than 200 km of tunnels were built here by the Vietnamese guerrillas and are often the highlight of South Vietnam touring. This morning we will be able to explore the bedrooms, meeting rooms, air-raid shelters, smokeless kitchens, and experience life underground in this extraordinary tunnel complex. After visiting the tunnels, we will back to Ho Chi Minh city. Evening: Motorbike street food tour The tour will start when at 5:30pm. The first part of the tour features three diverse street vendors where we will get to sample some of the many foods that they offer and learn about the history and cultural significance of each dish. Our guide will explain the many different sights that we will pass along the way as we travel to the different street vendors spread throughout Saigon. We will then go to a night market where we will have a chance to sample more foods and snacks as well as the many exotic fruits found in Vietnam. Our tour ends with one the most popular Vietnamese food traditions; “The Street Barbeque.” Here we will get a chance to gorge ourselves on as many different kinds of foods as you can eat. As long as we keep eating, we will keep ordering. In addition, we will have the option of sampling some of Vietnam’s famous rice wine including snake wine, ginseng wine and goat wine. the purpose of this tour is to a taste of as many different kinds of food as possible and is suitable for all travelers to Vietnam. Overnight Asian Ruby Select Hotel, Superior room. Day 11: Ho Chi Minh city – Siem Reap Meals: B We are flying to Siem Reap. Welcome to Cambodia! Upon arrival in Siem Reap, obtain your Cambodian visa. Clear Immigration and Customs and proceed into the arrival area. Transfer to the hotel. Overnight at Suorkear Boutique Hotel & Spa, deluxe room. Day 12: Siem Reap – Early Sunrise Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom & Ta Phrom Meals: B L This morning before sunrise we will depart the hotel for Angkor Wat, the largest and most breathtaking monument at Angkor. Built as the funerary temple for Suryavarman II, who ruled from 1112 to 1152, Angkor never fails to reward the first time or repeat visitor with its grand scale, surreal bas reliefs and unbelievable attention to detail. Here, we will spend the morning exploring one of man's most magnificent creations before returning to the hotel for a late breakfast. After breakfast we will start our full day visit to the South Gate of Angkor Thom and the temples of Bayon, Baphoun, Phimean Akas, The Royal Enclosure, the terraces of Elephants and the Leper King. Lunch at local restaurant. Next we’ll explore Ta Phrom. This jungle-clad temple with overgrown trees exudes a haunting and exotic atmosphere. The magnificent roots of a tree push between the temple's huge stone blocks in a strange embrace. Return to hotel. Overnight at Suorkear Boutique Hotel & Spa, deluxe room Day 13: Siem Reap – Kompong Kleang Tour & Cambodian Circus Meals: B L Following breakfast, at 11:00am we will visit to Kompong Kleang floating village. The Imagine wooden houses on 10 meter tall stilts, surrounded by water in the wet season and on the flood plains of the lake in the dry season. In the morning we visit a lively local market for shopping as the locals do. Upon arrival at the stilt house the family welcomes us with some milk and coffee before we start to join the activities of cooking local Khmer food (Enjoy lunch). This community of Kamphong Kleang knows many inventive ways to catch fish. We learn about the village life while visiting a local school, see the smoking of catfish, and speaking to a fisherman while he is making reparations on his net. In the late afternoon, when the sun is almost down, we take a boat on the Tonle Sap to watch an amazing sunset before return to Siem Reap. After some time to freshen up and relax at your resort, we will enjoy the unique show at the Cambodian Circus. The show starts from 8:00-9:00 pm. Phare Ponleu Selpak means “Brightness of the Arts” in Khmer language. This is a circus like none other and it’s very different to a western style circus. Phare is a Cambodian non-profit art organization founded in 1994 by eight young Cambodians returning from refugee camps at the Thai border to Battambang. The shows change and rotate depending on the time we visit; all of their shows are fantastic and focus on traditional and contemporary themes. Afterwards, return to your hotel for a good night's rest. Round-trip transfers and tickets included. Overnight at Suorkear Boutique Hotel & Spa, deluxe room. Day 14: Siem Reap departure Meals: B Hotel check out time is 12:00 noon. Transfer to airport.
