What we're about

You are cordially invited to join us in thoughtful discussions on the book “Thinking, Fast and Slow” by Nobel Laureate Daniel Kahneman—and use the ideas for transforming your life for the better, In the company of a group of serious and curious readers doing the same.

Thinking, Fast & Slow is one of the most influential and popular recent books in psychology. This book establishes a powerful yet simple concepts of two systems in psychology: System 1 which operates automatically and quickly, requiring almost no effort, with almost no sense of voluntary control; and System 2 which allocates mental effort to tasks that demand it, including complex computation—with subjective experience of agency, choice and concentration.

If you were planning to read this book, here is your chance to read it with a large group of likeminded people. If you have already read the book, here is your chance to discuss it with thoughtful readers. Additionally, here is your chance to identify how ideas in each chapter can be used to make our lives better. We hope to egg each other on to actively use them to make our lives better, sharing tips, ad inspiring each other along the way.

These Meetups take place on Almost Every Saturday from 3pm to 4:30pm at 60 Wall Street Atrium. We already have a thriving discussion group https://www.meetup.com/The-103-Great-Ideas-Conversations . We get between 30-60 people for our discussions every Saturday.

All are welcome to join this group. While reading of the book is recommended, it is not required to attend the Meetups. Those who have read the book will be giving overviews of the book at the Meetups.

Thinking, Fast and Slow & Jordan Peterson’s 12 Rules for Life

We will start with a presentation of three rules from the book “12 Rules for Life” by Jordan Peterson. We will then apply the concepts of System 1 & System 2 from the book Thinking, Fast and Slow to Jordan Peterson’s book and viasa versa. The central thesis of Thinking, Fast and Slow is that We have two fundamentally dissimilar systems in us: a dichotomy between two modes of thought: "System 1" is fast, instinctive and emotional; "System 2" is slower, more deliberative, and more logical. The book describes and documents various consequences of having this “split personality”, and suggests several to dos how how best to use both our systems. Here is a good summary of the book from Wikipedia to get you oriented: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thinking,_Fast_and_Slow Here is a video of Kahneman talking about System 1 and System 2: https://youtu.be/CjVQJdIrDJ0 We will be joined by 40+ conversationalists from other groups.
