How and why does history get revised over time? What revelations have there been about Aboriginal history, and histories of other peoples? The recommended book on Aboriginal history is: Dark emu : black seeds : agriculture or accident?/ Bruce Pascoe Or, as an alternative, on histories of other peoples, you could try this: Boudica : the life of Britain's legendary warrior queen / Vanessa Collingridge Dark Emu Available from the library as book, audio and e-book (though the most recent e-book version has many holds on it). There are various versions so hopefully the library will allow interlibrary loan of the less recent ones. http://encore.slwa.wa.gov.au/iii/encore/search/C__Sdark%20emu%20Bruce%20Pascoe__Orightresult?lang=eng Available from the publisher as book and e-book. Why and how has humanity become less violent over time? What do we need to do to ensure this downward trend continues and does not reverse? The recommended book is The Better Angels of Our Nature by Steven Pinker. This is a very big book, but there is no book club in June, so hopefully you will have plenty of time to read it. If I manage to get through enough of it before the end of May, I might try and narrow down sections of the book to read, but no promises! What does a really unequal society look like? How does it get that way? What happens to the people at the top? What if the rich really could get away with murder? The recommended book is 84K / Claire North. An acceptable alternative could be the Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood. The recommended book is: Happy as : why the quest for happiness is making us miserable / Lisa Portolan ; foreword by Tim Fergusson 2018 Another alternative available on inter library loan might be: Happy money : the science of smarter spending / Elizabeth Dunn & Michael Norton 2013 Or feel free to read another book on the same topic, there is quite a few.
