I ♥️ REFACTORING: ACCELERATING DELIVERY IN LEGACY CODEBASES

Software is found in every aspect of society, growing ever more present in our lives for the last 50 years. Some critical pieces of currently running infrastructure are decades old. And yet, the general public has the same expectations of legacy software as of the latest greenfield app: it needs to be fast, reliable, competitive. Rewriting from scratch is not a viable option for most established businesses, who then have to send their developers on a difficult task: delivering new features on top of legacy code.

Legacy code. The term strikes disgust in the heart of programmers, conjuring images of monolithic, untested, incomprehensible software that is best left untouched. But to Dominique Rolin, Senior Consultant at Thoughtworks, it cuts to the core of what she loves most about software engineering: problem-solving. In this talk, she will shed new light on old code, challenging the stigma surrounding it, and sharing how cultivating interest in code-archeology and refactoring can make working with legacy code rewarding.

Working with legacy code doesn’t have to be scary, or slow! In this talk, we will discuss techniques to speed-up delivery while gaining confidence to incrementally change your legacy code.

SPEAKER:

Dominique Rolin, Senior Consultant, ThoughtWorks

Growing up in France, Dominique always had an interest in computers, but coming from an artistic family she didn't realise her favorite hobby could be a career. Instead of a CS degree, she studied graphic design and graduated around the time the Web became a thing.

Riding the early wave of the Internet-era she taught herself HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP and worked as what was then-called a "Webmaster". Over the course of 16 years she shifted more and more towards back-end programming, learning a bit more about proper software engineering and is now a Senior Developer with Thoughtworks.
