Tiny Planet Book Club
Get to know your neighbor
Fly to an unknown land and make a friend. Sleep in their home. Eat their food. Experience their day-to-day challenges and joys. How do they make their living? Raise and feed their kids? Fall in love?
Do this all just by reading a book! If you love meeting people from other cultures, please join us at 7:00 p.m. every second Monday of the month (except major holidays) at a cafe in Sandy.
This is a non-fiction book club.
Examples of what we read:
Leaving Mother Lake: A Girlhood at the Edge of the World by Yang Erche Namu
The Flame Trees of Thika: Memories of an African Childhood by Elspeth Huxley
Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood by Fatima Mernissi
Return to Childhood: The Memoir of a Modern Moroccan Woman by Leila Abouzeid
The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures by Anne Fadiman
Catfish and Mandala: A Two-Wheeled Voyage Through the Landscape and Memory of Vietnam by Andrew X. Pham
Angela's Ashes: A Memoir by Frank McCourt
Details: The club meets in a cafe. This is a place of business so everyone must purchase something. Just a drink is fine. The cafe has a wide-range of options: Entrees, tapas, desserts, coffee, sodas, wine, beer, etc.
How we choose our books: Everyone gets a turn at choosing what we read. The book chooser changes every month. When it's your turn to choose (one month prior to the actual month we'll read your book), you present three choices of books to the group. Then we vote. The book with the most votes is the one we read. (The three month cycle is so there's no lag time between obtaining our books and reading them.)
Dues: Come try us out for a month for free. If this is your cup of tea, please help out with our Meetup costs by paying our modest dues. The free month starts AFTER you've attended one meeting. So no need to pay until you're able to attend a meeting. Thanks! Winona
