    Link visible for attendees

    Welcome to Toastmasters 4 Writers!

Toastmasters 4 Writers is a specialty Toastmasters club for everyone who loves storytelling and writing in any genre. You don't need to be published or professional writer to enjoy our Toastmasters 4 Writers club.

For 17 years, Toastmasters 4 Writers has been providing a safe and welcoming place for people to experience profound growth as communicators and leaders. We are here to cheer on all our members as they overcome their fear of speaking in front of groups, excel as presenters and share their stories.

Our meeting theme on October 1, 2022 is "Stories of Suspense!" and Angela Bolton will be our Toastmaster of the Day!

We are meeting on Zoom the first Saturday, and holding hybrid meetings with both "Zoomies" and "Roomies" on the 3rd Saturday monthly. We still currently require in-person attendees to be fully vaccinated against Covid and only attend if you are feeling well.

Our meetings start at 10 AM sharp, and end approximately at noon.

Here is the basic structure of our meetings:

    1. INTRODUCTION: The President, Toastmaster and supporting members kick off the meeting.
    2. SPEECHES: One to three speeches are presented by members from a variety of experience levels.
    3. TABLE TOPICS: Guests and members are invited to give 1-2 minute impromptu speeches or share a story.
    4. EVALUATIONS: Select members offer constructive feedback on the speeches presented.

Message from our Toastmaster of the Day:

Hi Toastmasters 4 Writers Members and Guests!

“Good things come to those who wait” ... and that is certainly true for stories of suspense where the dénouement, or resolution, happens after a gradual buildup of intrigue, plot twists, mystery and/or terror.

With a great story of suspense, though, the reader or viewer does far more than simply wait. The talent of the storyteller grips us and doesn’t let us go, and we have an enveloping and visceral experience.

I vividly remember seeing The Silence of The Lambs in a movie theater in 1991 – 31 years ago. Clarice Starling’s work to catch a killer builds over two hours as clues are revealed one by one, leading to the heart-pounding sequence near the end of the film when she has to avoid becoming his next victim. I remember my own fear as I sat in my safe theater seat, the screams of my fellow patrons around me, and even checking under my own bed and in my bathroom when I got home after the movie. Yes, I really did that!

Many of my favorite stories are in the genre of suspense. The movies The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The River Wild come to mind, as well as several books and short stories (such as To Build a Fire) by Jack London. For a mix of suspense and comedy, I think it’s hard to beat the movie Catch Me If You Can – and I confess, I’m addicted to the detective series Castle.

Stories of suspense rivet our attention, activate our feelings, and remain in our memory – sometimes forever – because of their masterful use of suspense as a story unfolds and untangles. What are your favorite stories of suspense as we inch…ever closer… to Halloween?

Let's have fun with "Stories of Suspense!" at our meeting on Saturday, October 1.
