Presentation 1: Digital Transformation & Cloud

Presentation Summary: Cloud computing and services are central to digital transformation. Challenges exist because existing business processes—and classical project management itself—most likely pose a risk to successful adoption of the cloud. Cloud
projects can be done in an eye blink not suited to waterfall or phased projects. Bimodal operations have been suggested, but may receive pushback from executives who think linearly. A better approach is a cloud team and cloud center of excellence.

Although the cloud is hyped for low cost, a large percentage of cloud projects fail due to cost and security. These are the result of lack of knowledge, skills, and experience. Common issues organizations face are the shortage of digital skills in the market; the lack of necessary skills in the leadership team to drive digital transformation; and data sovereignty.

Brief Presenter Bio:David Shaw is a Project Management Professional (PMP) and a Professional in Critical Infrastructure Protection (PCIP). He has been working on and thinking about cloud projects since 2015. His current assignment is developing a governance framework for the cloud for the third-largest municipality in North

America.

Presentation 2: Lift, shift, and evolve: Kira into AWS

Presentation Summary: How we (Kira Systems) moved our SaaS application from a VMware-based setup into AWS, then evolved our architecture to take advantage of various bits of AWS’ IaaS offerings. Some lessons learned, some things we’re doing, and some constraints on why we’re not using some of AWS’ PaaS services. Mostly touching on Autoscaling, Spot Instances, VPC architecture, and KMS.

Brief Presenter Bio: Joey Coleman has over 20 year experience in various roles including sysadmin, software developer, devops (before and after it was called that), and academic. BSc at Ryerson, PhD at Newcastle upon Tyne. Currently Director of Systems at Kira Systems, managing the production infrastructure and the team that runs it.
