Exceptional vegan and vegetarian food places dot this area, some hiding in plain sight. What are their specialties and raison d’etre? We’ll learn (and do some food sampling) as we stroll the strip, addressing several intriguing questions: Why are there so many oddly-shaped buildings on the corners? THE CURE 1484/ Formerly The Hogtown Cure; rebranded as The Cure, with major, cosy and inviting interior makeover and new emphasis on evening dining drinks and live music Thursday through Sunday evenings. Owners source local, farmed trout and have healthy vegetable soups and some mains. Love this place and owners Steve + Chris are super-hospitable. MKG GALLERY 1445/ SEE Jayce Salloum: A History of Photography exhibition of photo-works; in an act of reclamation and contemplation, Salloum reproduces other artists’ photos including photographs by Ansel Adams, Lorraine Gilbert, Barbara Spohr. A grandson of Syrian immigrants from the Bekaa Valley (Lebanon) he was born and raised on Sylix (Okanagan) territory in Kelowna, BC. A recipient of the 2014 Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts, Salloum is a finalist for the 2016 Scotiabank Photography Award.
E.L. RUDDY BAR + CAFÉ 1371/ Helena Kosikova is owner of this tiny vegetarian eatery with back patio. Well-supported by local community, it opens at 4 PM, turns into an (unofficially lesbian) bar, and continues until 2 AM. Occasional art shows here too.
PORTERHOUSE PUB 1321/ Opens at 6 PM. Vegan and vegetarian resto-pub. Co-owners and chefs are Ross Corder (Hot Beans formerly) and Rick Hardisty (Fresh, Momufuku, Woodlot). The Porter House Yuba Sandwich is super: marinated tofu slices, braised purple cabbage, carmelized onions, grainy mustard, horseradish-mayo, on grilled bread. Craft beers include Weihenstephan the oldest brew in the world, first by Benedictine monks in 1040 CE!

UFFICIO 1214 /Recently opened, chic-casual Italian pescatarian/vegetarian restaurant. Seasonally-inflected fare which currently features truffles, mushrooms and rhubarb (as in Rhubarb Bellini cocktails).
VEG HED FRESH BAR 1199/ NOT OPEN ON WEEKENDS. Vegan, GMO- , gluten- and nut-free. Primarily takeout; Owner/chef Ren Mercer chef was most recently executive chef at the Spoke Club + has more than 20 year’s-worth of experience including in three-Michelin-starred European restaurants. Mercer was raised on a vegetable farm in the Bambridge-Waterloo area with what he calls a “Neo-Amish” family. Veg Hed partner is Ruth Magbanua, originally from rural Phillipines; noticing a number of family members with cancer, she decided to focus on developing a healthier diet. Highly recommended: grilled aged cheddar-cheese sandwich with ancho onion chutney or goat cheese, drizzled with honey, with amazing crunchy side-salad. Also made-to-order drinks (Green Beach Smoothie, with pineapple, kale, banana, coconut oil, shiso basil, coconut flakes and hemp hearts, and immune boosters such as their legendary The Golden Zinger with fresh turmeric, ginger, apple, wildflower honey and Himalayan salt. Mercer & Magbanua are also do-gooders: she has a background in nursing with a focus on street-youth and victims of human trafficking; The long-term goal for Veghed is to help fund child-based safety and outreach projects in Toronto like the Canadian Music Therapy Trust Fund, and the Community Learning Centre for the Development of Humanity in Bangkok, where both have worked.
