Welcome Toronto Cassandra Users!
I'm happy to announce our first Toronto Cassandra meetup sponsored by DataStax and Viafoura!
For the first time, we will meet together and exchange our Cassandra experience, ask questions to each other and have some fun. There will also be a hands-on demonstration about getting started with C* installations by Victor Anjos (http://www.linkedin.com/in/victoranjos).
Please join us if you just want to know more about getting started with Cassandra or have any specific issues you want to be resolved —you are more encouraged to come and ask your questions.
Victor is a graduate of the University of Toronto, with a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics and Physics. He has contributed to many post-graduate research projects at McGill and Concordia in Bio-Informatics and Data Warehousing. He is a detail-oriented, experienced Data Scientist and Architect with 15 years hands-on software development lifecycle with an emphasis on research, design, and creation of Artificial Intelligence software products. Currently specializing in Machine Learning, Data Mining and Search Engines; fine tuning recommender systems which actively learn from each interaction using ML and DM methods.
Victor has built Data Warehouse solutions and Data Centres for companies such as Sun Microsystems, HSBC, Telus and ATI/AMD. Before the word (and notion) of Big Data existed, Victor was well entrenched in the ever evolving data world. Victor has been using C* since version 0.8 and is a major driver in Viafoura's adoption of Cassandra for its technology stack.
Victor was also the organizer and one of the key presenters at the Viafoura led Big Data Week (in Toronto) this past April http://viafoura.com/bdw/. He runs a Not-For-Profit called Data For Good (@Data_for_Good) which brings together leading data scientists and developers with high impact social organizations through a comprehensive, collaborative approach
that leads to shared insights, greater understanding, and positive action through data in the service of humanity.
6:30pm - Food/Beverage
7:00pm - Presentation by Victor Anjos
7:45pm - Q&A/Social/Future Meetup Brainstorming
I hope you're able to join us!
P.S. We are actively searching for more speakers! If you have something to say about your real-life Cassandra experience - feel free to email me at [masked] and send your Topic and short agenda.
Message from VICTOR (also posted as comment below):
I am looking to do a Ubuntu installation with you guys and lead you through it. This will further lead us (the group) into some use of this VM with Cassandra at a later time (likely in September) in which we can start going through an exercise of data-modelling in Cassandra (or, really, a non-relational Data Model).
Please come prepared with at least Ubuntu Precise (12.04) and 2GB RAM available on that VM. This should work on any Linux laptop as well, or OS X, but I cannot guarantee or troubleshoot your OS issues during a meetup, so please conform and come prepared with the aforementioned requirements.
If you have never installed a VM or some Hypervisor, please take the next 10 days to do so --- it'll probably take about 1-2 hours of your time).
* If time permits, I will also show you a really cool github project that allows you to install a full Cassandra Cluster (any version) locally to test.
