• What we'll do
We look for Great Gray and Northern Hawk Owls as well as many other northern bird and mammal species in Northern Ontario. It is a peak year for Snowshoe Hares, so many Canada Lynx have been seen by locals, and the chances are highest during this time to see this otherwise incredibly rare and elusive animal.
Northern Ontario is a naturalist's paradise, but not many know about its secrets. Join us on a four-day journey where we will drive into the boreal forest to see and photograph some of Canada's most iconic bird and mammal species! We have good chances to see Northern Hawk Owl and Great Gray Owl - birds often sought by photographers and birdwatchers. Watching a Great Gray Owl hunting only a few feet away in a road cut is an unforgettable experience! Colourful finches such as Pine Grosbeaks, crossbills and redpolls will join us along the road in numbers, along with both Spruce and Ruffed Grouse. We will keep an eye out for mammals, as we have good chances at spotting some as we are covering a lot of ground. Quiet weekend highways are great for spotting mammals such as Moose, Gray Wolf, American Marten or perhaps Fisher. This winter, the Snowshoe Hare population is very high, and as a result there have been many reports of Canada Lynx on our route. We will have to be very lucky to see this mysterious cat, but this year our chances are the best. Also taking advantage of the high hare population are Red Foxes and Long and Short-tailed Weasels, which are easier to see.
Northern Ontario holds many wonderful secrets and you never know what you may see, so join us as we explore this little-known stunningly beautiful part of the province and search for some of Canada's greatest wildlife!
Note: Feeding wildlife and trespassing on private property will not be tolerated.
