Come Try Underwater Hockey
This underwater hockey game is geared to players with only a little experience or those trying it for the first time. A good event to first try the sport or dive deeper into the game and team work. As a special promotion, new players can join all three games in November for $30.00 GEAR We supply all of the sticks and other underwater hockey gear you'll use to play. You'll need a swim suit, and feel free to bring your own fins, masks or snorkel if you have any! GAME PREP If it's your first game, please come early for gear (8:45 or so). We'll be poolside to help you gear up. Go directly to the change rooms to get ready and meet us pool side. At 10:00 we should be wrapping up quickly out of respect to the staff who need to lock up. We'll sometimes head to a bar afterwards for food or drinks. GAME RULES We'll explain the rules as we go. Like hockey, play the puck. Check out wikipedia or here: http://www.sfuwh.org/uwh-beginner-guide/rules FEE We rent our pool time from the City, so we all chip in an equal amount ($12 / game) to cover it. Trinity Bellwoods has a free parking lot on-site.

What we're about

Underwater Hockey is an exciting sport involving strategy, skill and fitness. Played at the bottom of a pool using snorkeling gear, teams try to get the weighted puck into the opposing goal by using short curved sticks. The sport is relatively low-impact, a good cross-training activity and offers an interesting break from other traditional sports.

Our club has been around for 5+ years and members come from all kinds of backgrounds. The games feature a mix of beginners to experienced players and we try to accommodate needs where possible. Both men and women play together (aka "co-ed") and generally we have a ratio of 60-70% male to 30-40% female. The atmosphere is very social and we maintain a high level of respect and safety.

Location: The club plays weekly at the Trinity-Bellwoods pool in downtown Toronto (Strachan & Queen St. West) where parking is available and there's easy access by transit. The money charged per player goes directly to the expense of the city permit for use of the pool.

Equipment: There's a large cache of used equipment available to anyone, especially beginners. Ideally any returning player should bring as much of their own equipment as possible. After a few games most players start purchasing their own equipment. Generally, if you have snorkeling gear, you should bring it. Don't forget your swimsuit and a towel!

To order gear, there are mainly 2 specialized companies in North America:

Canam UWH gear (USA) (http://www.canamuwhgear.com)

Bentfish USA (http://www.bentfishusa.com)

Most common tournaments attended included Michigan (Feb), Guelph (March), Cornwall (Sept), London (October), Montreal (November) and others. Depending of the interest we usually send 1 or 2 teams. Tournaments are a great opportunity for beginners to learn quickly in a very short period of time. We play between 5 to 8 games.
