Easy Hike - Lonnie Loop from the Visitor Center

  • North Mountain/Shaw Butte Visitor Center

12950 North 7th Street, Phoenix, AZ (map)

    33.598549 -112.066811

  • This hike is rated EASY, however, the trail is rocky so I recommend wearing sturdy footwear.

Come out for a hike from the 7th Street entrance to North Mountain Park. This is an easy hike and perfect for beginners or if you'd just like to do an easy one for a change. The trails are relatively flat with some gentle ups and downs, and one short but steep hill. We'll take the #100 trail from the 7th Street parking lot to the #306 trail then back to the #100 in a big loop. Bring a flashlight or headlamp, part of the hike will be after dark. You're encouraged to bring snacks, cameras, and must bring at least 1+ liter of water per person and sturdy hiking footwear.

This is a combined event with Phoenix (2-Hour) Beginner Hikers, we will be hiking at a moderate pace.

    DISTANCE: 3.5 miles round trip
    ELEVATION GAIN: 100 ft
    DURATION: 1.5 hours
    TRAIL STYLE: Big loop
    DOGS: Yes, if leashed.
    FACILITIES: Drinking Fountain and Restrooms

Chuck, Jim, Judy, Queen and Shawn all completed this hike tonight. Since we all arrived early, we started the hike earlier and were done before 20:00.

I just got home and watched the weather news. There is a dust storm rolling up the I-10 toward Phoenix expected to arrive in an hour. With the storm coming in I am going to cancel the hike for tonight.

I am looking at the weather, some say dust and lightning are on the way. If there is a dust storm, lightning or rain I will cancel the hike.

The monsoons are now active, always carry a bandanna so you can cover your nose and mouth if you get caught out in a dust storm. That said, I won't hike if a storm is expected or if it looks like a storm. Check back before the hike to make sure it has not been canceled.
