One of the most popular hikes (and one of my personal favorites) in the Superstition Wilderness is the Peralta Trail to Fremont Saddle. This route takes you into the scenic backcountry of the central Superstitions and offers one of the best views of Weaver’s Needle, a landmark rock spire in the center of this mountain range. The trail follows the canyon bottom for more than a mile, climbing gradually and criss-crossing normally dry Peralta Creek. The last mile or so is a bit steeper as you climb out of the lush, narrow canyon to Fremont Saddle, here we can take a break, have snacks, take pictures and just enjoy the views. We will then continue on to the " Lone Tree " where we have a better view of Weaver's Needle, which dominates the western Superstitions, also dominates the legends of the Lost Dutchman’s Gold Mine, said to lie, still undiscovered, in the Needle’s 1220-foot shadow.
Our mileage and time are variable depending on how long we enjoy the views from the top and how many breaks we take. For the hike bring plenty of drinking water, food (snacks and lunch) for the trail, cameras, sun protection, hiking poles if you use them.
This area has a group size limit of 15 per wilderness rules. It also gets quite crowded on the weekends during the hiking season, so get to the parking lot early.
You are solely responsible for your own personal safety and well being. Expect the same risks and take the same precautions as if you were hiking alone.
