Camp and Hike Mount Princeton

It's getting to be that time of year to start breaking out the Tents and sleeping bags so let's kick it off by doing a camping trip AND hike!

This is a dog friendly trip.

For those who want to camp: we will meet in Conifer at the North end of the Safeway parking lot at 8am on Saturday and leave out by 8:30. We will head down the 285 to just past Fairplay to the top of Trout creek pass (9,000 feet in elevation) where we will turn off onto Forest 311. There are several primitive camp sites back into this area that are easily accessible and large enough to accommodate large groups. There are many trails in the area that are good for taking your mountain bikes or doing small hikes separate from the group.

You will be responsible for bringing your own food and cook/camp gear and plenty of water. Please try to bring a little bit of fire wood as well. If you would like to camp but don't have the gear, REI has great prices for renting.

Directions to camp area: From Fairplay, CO head south on US Hwy 285 for 22.2 miles. At the top of Trout Creek Pass turn right onto Forest Road 311.

The hike portion: will be on Sunday. We will meet at the Gun Smoke truck stop at 9 am and leave out by 9:30 for the trail head. This is a 14'er so expect snow. I was there last weekend to check out the trail and was able to make it to 11,000 feet without micro spikes or gators needed. There is a large parking lot at the beginning of the trail head off county road 322. The first part of this trail is a basic four wheel drive trail. If we can get a couple people with high clearance vehicles, we can carpool about 2 miles up the road.

We will be running two groups of hikers. I will take a group of the faster paced folks, Amanda will take a group of the slower paced.

Directions to the trail head: From Buena Vista: From the center of town, drive west on the County Road (CR) 306 for 0.7 miles. Turn left on CR 321 and continue south for 7.2 miles. Turn right onto CR 322 at a large sign. From South of Buena Vista: Over 5 miles south of the U.S. 285 / 24 junction, turn west on County Road 162 in the town of Nathrop. Drive over 4 miles to a junction. Turn right on CR 321. After 1.2 miles, turn left on CR 322.
On CR 322, drive 0.8 miles to a fork in the road. Bear right into the Mt. Princeton trailhead. This trailhead is at 8,900' and there is a large parking area.

After hike brew: Eddyline Brewery,
926 South Main Buena Vista,  CO 81211

Hi Micah and Amanda! Did you say high clearance vehicle? Hmmm this all the sudden became even more interesting :-) I may be in the area and could car pool folks up the road. I'll possibly be camping just don't know yet. I'll know more tomorrow or Thursday.

Camping only on FR 311 near Sevenmile Creek. I'll be arriving on Friday night around 18:00 and leaving Sunday at 9:00. Probably fishing and biking mostly on Saturday. I'll post my mileage from turnoff at Highway 285 on Friday when I arrive just in case..

We are so excited about the trip! Will we be close to our vehicles when we camp or do we walk aways and then camp?

Jamie, we will be camping close to our cars.

Jaime, The area we are looking to camp is near Sevenmile Creek. If you look at Google Earth there appears to be many areas to camp (Micah also mentions in the event that there are several primitive camp sites). I have never been to this area, but can't wait to check it out. Joe and I are looking at an area 6 miles in after the right turn off Highway 285 on the North side of FR 311. We both will have our small campers. One silver (with a silver Jeep) and one white (white a white Toyota.
