Mt Sniktau

  • Aug 5, 2012 · 8:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

THE PRE-MEET:

We will meet at the trailhead by 8:15am, and start hiking by 8:30am (NOT at The Alpine Restaurant and Bar) - See directions to Mt Sniktau trailhead below.

DIRECTIONS:

From Denver:
From Denver take I-70 west to exit 216 which is hwy 6. Continue on Hwy 6 up Loveland Pass for 4.4 miles to the top of Loveland Pass. Park in the lot and take the trail to the east (opposite side of the street as above sign). There is no bathroom on top of the pass, the closest is in Silver Plume several miles to the east.

THE TRAIL:

Starting elevation: 11,990 '
Ending Elevation: 13,234 '
Elevation Change: + 1,244' net elevation gain
Difficulty: Moderate plus (I added the plus rating for this because the first mile starts with about 1000' elevation gain)
Total hiking time: Approximately 3 to 3.5 hours
Round Trip Length: Approximately 4 miles
Begin your hike at the top of Loveland Pass on US Hwy 6 - Elevation 11,992 feet. Park at the top and head east up the trail which follows the ridge.
Note: This hike has the exact same beginning as the hike up to Grizzly Peak . After climbing about a thousand vertical feet up this well visited trail you will reach "the top" which puts you in easy reach of both Sniktau and Grizzly Peak .

Whereas you would hike to the south to reach Gr izzly, you will need to turn north to reach Mount Sniktau . To reach the summit of Sniktau follow the ridge down and then up one unnamed summit, over this summit, down about a couple of hundred feet and back up several hundred feet. This will put you on top of Mount Sniktau - a total distance of about two miles (or less).

THE APRES HIKE:
We will meet at the Alpine Restaurant and Bar in Georgetown starting at approximately between 1 and 1:30pm. Bryce will call ahead with a head count for the restaurant prior to leaving from the trail head. If you do not plan on going to the restaurant, please let Bryce know.

NOTES (PLEASE READ!!):

1) PLEASE READ, UNDERSTAND AND AGREE TO OUR GENERAL RULES, PHILOSIPHY AND LIABILITY WAIVER ON THE MAIN PAGE

2) Bring extra water, as high elevations dehydrate the body at a faster rate.

3) Arrive early to secure parking, avoid crowds and afternoon thunderstorms. Be mindful of changing weather patterns and leave the summit well before storms develop. Expect cooler temperatures, strong sun and wind in the open tundra. Carry versatile layers with sun, wind and rain protection.

4) Hiking poles are highly recommended to assist with steep grades and uneven terrain.

5) Please remember that mountain hiking, especially high altitude hiking is going to mean that we will end up spreading out according to our pace and fitness levels. If you do split off ahead from the group, please wait at the summit for most of the members to arrive. If you feel that you will be in the tail end of the hike, we will provide a walkie-talkie to one host to communicate with the advance group (cell phones will not be of much use).

6) IF you run a carpool, or participate in a carpool, please coordinate with each other as to your individual pace!

7). Bring a change of shoes for the restaurant. I suggest some sort of flip-flops. Your feet will thank you!

8) Have fun!!

Didn't exactly blow me away like Bryce said.

  • Bryce

Hi Everybody...I hope all had a good time. I heard of no one getting blown off the top so I guess my voodoo ritual worked.

Doc reports that I have (preferably had) the Flu that incited Bronchitis. Hopefully that won't incite Pneumonia. Was successful at losing my voice so Texting practically became my sole form of communication; although I sound slightly better today.

I have been informed by a rather close friend to not get too excited by my 'false sense' of improvement today since I have joined the Barry Bonds' of the world and am now legally 'juicing' it up now to combat my condition.

Debbie I real bummed I did not get a chance to see you today. I was hoping to catch up with you on life so far this Summer. We both would have needed to talk in sign language anyway to make it constructive.

Had a blasts with everyone. Thanks for having me and hope to see you all again soon. Sorry I could not make the restaurant afterwards.

This was so much fun! As my first Meetup with this group, I'm very excited to attend more as the people were all great.

Sunday forecast - A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after noon. Mostly sunny, with a high near 64. West northwest wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon.

bryce-so sorry you are sick :( I was looking forward to seeing you.

    August 4, 2012

  • Robin

I'll be at the pnr to carpool as well!

    August 4, 2012

  • Bryce

Hi Everybody...I am very sorry to inform all that my condition has not gotten better and appears to not simply be your common cold. I will be visiting my Weekend Clinic soon to find out what the heck is goin on.

I spoke with Mikey and he said he is cool with leading Sniktau solo. So all please be good boys and girls with Mikey.

I am very sorry about this. I feel truly bummed out.

I ask all to please coordinate with your fellow Car Poolers about when to return from the Sniktau to the vehicle. Please do not play GI Joe and explore the rest of the world without first coordinating with the rest of the group.

Have fun everybody!!! Use your head more than your feet!!!

Bryce just called in sick, so it looks like I will be your main organizer tomorrow. I am watching my son this AM and doing an event later today, so text or call me at[masked] if there are any last minute questions. And yes, it could be windy up there!

I'm hopin to put on my game face by Sunday and possibly some Goggles. Not to scare anybody off cause the more the merrier IMO, did I mention the time I ran into the flying pebbles up there? :-))))))

OK all that windy stuff was in the Spring last year and not high into Summer....never mind....I 'guarantee' mother nature will be kind to all kind (and non-foolish) souls. Mikey you better bring your wind breaker now that you got me with a 'pacifier' in my mouth. I don't know how to spell that either.

    August 2, 2012

    • Mikey

Darn it! You mean I have to cover up the Thundercats with a windbreaker????

      August 3, 2012

  • Bryce

Sniktau can get super windy up at the top. How windy? Trust me...windy enough.

I encourage all to bring a wind breaker shell for both upper body and legs. If you like to wear a hat then maybe some kind of hat that you can strap around your head.

I have seen folks wear Ski Goggles up there due to the wind (including myself). That's how windy it can get. Other option would be snug sun glasses.

I'm excited to see all again or for the first time. Cheers!

WIND? It is on the continental divide, folks.

      August 3, 2012

  • Bryce

Sorry folks I've been fighting a Summer Cold this week so I apologize for my very delayed response. I never get those in the Summer so I feel really weird to admit that.

OBTW -- Did I mention that it can get windy up at Sniktau?

That cold medicine must be really in high gear. :-)

Actually I've only been high this week on Ibuprophine (how the heck do you spell that?) and Melatonine. I've been having a heck of a time trying to catch some ZZZZZZZZZZssss at night. So far the Melatonine seems more like 'mellow to none' as in kind of not doin a whole lot for me.

  • Vass I.

Woolly Mammoth - I'll be there too.

    August 2, 2012

  • Henry

I'll see you guys at the lot as well.

    August 2, 2012

  • Haley

Good call Jen. For those carpooling, lets meet at Wooly Mammoth BB between 7:00 - 7:10 a.m. with the intention of leaving by 7:15 to head towards Loveland Pass.

    August 1, 2012

  • Jen

Google maps says estimated time from w.m. lot to trail head is about an hour so it may be best for those planning to carpool to leave by 7:15? I plan on being there at 7-7:10 in section BB (across from Conoco). That's BB as in bubbling brew.

    August 1, 2012

  • Debbie P.

I will also be meeting at the Wooly Mammoth lot to join the car pool

    August 1, 2012

  • Stephanie

I would like to grab a ride too.

    August 1, 2012

  • Greg

I would also be interested in carpooling from Wooly Mammoth

    August 1, 2012

  • Haley

Carpooling is a good idea. There is limited parking at the trailhead. Count me in. Meet at 7:30 am?

I'd be interested in carpooling from the Wooly Mammoth Lot.

    August 1, 2012

  • Jen

I think regardless of the weather, Sarah and Nicole will probably concur that the hike will be a mind "blowing" experience. Before I become too long "winded", is anyone interested in forming carpool(s) from the wooly mammoth lot Sunday morning?

    August 1, 2012

  • Sarah

Really? Bryce, does it get windy up there?

    1 · July 31, 2012

  • Jen

Bryce, I get the feeling that it may be a bit "breezy" up there..... : P

    July 31, 2012

  • Bryce

Also would be wise to bring a light weight thermal liner. As I eluded, the Wind Chill Factor can be huge.
