What we're about

Trails To Freedom is a mountain biking program, launched in October 2018, for military veterans, reservists, and active duty military personnel. Rides will consist of, and be led by, military veterans. All skill and fitness levels are welcomed (Participants are responsible for assessing their fitness, skill, and equipment levels and participating accordingly). This is a program of Concerned Long Island Mountain Bicyclists (CLIMB). Learn more about CLIMB at https://www.climbonline.org/2014j/index.php... (https://www.climbonline.org/2014j/index.php/about-climb)

Initially, the program will take place on the second Saturday of each month at the Edgewood Preserve on Commack Road in Deer Park. This is a NY State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) facility. There are a variety of trails there, including an old paved road, fire roads (doubletrack), and about 15 miles of purpose-built singletrack. Over time, we will expand to other trails around Long Island, participate in skills clinics, and, hopefully, form a race team. We will also work with land managers to create trails accessible to adaptive cycles.

To ride with us, you must be a member (if the $30 annual membership is prohibitive, contact us), sign a waiver at each ride, abide by trail rules and etiquette, and use basic safety equipment (helmet and eye protection). The CLIMB Membership page is at: https://www.climbonline.org/2014j/index.php... (https://www.climbonline.org/2014j/index.php/membership)

You will need to fill out a waiver form before the ride. We will have some available at the ride, or you can print out one ahead of time at: https://www.climbonline.org/pdf/CLIMB_Waiver_Adult.pdf . And please make sure your CLIMB membership is current.

The DEC requires a permit for Edgewood Preserve (and most DEC properties in Suffolk County). Download and fill it out at http://www.dec.ny.gov/docs/regions_pdf/newaccessprmt.pdf .

For more information, contact the program coordinator, Bob Muller, at BobMuller@gmail.com.

Mountain biking is an inherently risky activity. Personal safety is the responsibility of each participant. CLIMB will teach safety protocol but participants are encouraged to ride within their own ability level and in control. The trails are used at everyone’s own risk and there are no guarantees of personal safety. Trails are subject to change due to weather and use. Riders may encounter roots, rocks, logs, holes and sudden drop offs etc.

Monthly Veterans' Trail Ride

Edgewood Preserve

Our monthly ride through the varied trails at Edgewood Preserve. This ride is appropriate for all skill and fitness levels. We'll adjust the ride distance and pace to adapt to the attendees. We should have the volunteers on hand to do multiple rides, if we want to split up for different distances and/or paces. Edgewood has a wide variety of trails, so we can do rides that are be appropriate for every skill and fitness level (this is why we chose to start these rides at Edgewood -- we'll hit other trails once the program is established) 9:00 is ride time, so please show up early to sign the waiver form, ask questions, get acquainted, etc. If you'd like to pre-print a waiver, they are at: https://www.climbonline.org/pdf/CLIMB_Waiver_Adult.pdf As always, helmet and eye protection are required. Feel free to text me with any questions:[masked]. You can call, if that works better, but it will probably take me longer to get back to you.
