    Meetup time at 512 P&R: 7:00AM

    Departure time: 7:15AM

DIRECTIONS: From southbound I-5, take exit 21 (Woodland exit) and keep going straight at the end of the ramp, continuing on Pacific Ave.  Turn left onto WA-503 and continue on this road towards the town of Cougar.  When 503 bends to the south, stay on SPUR 503 to reach Cougar.  Past Cougar, keep going straight and the road will eventually turn into Forest Service Road 90.  Turn left on FS Road 83, and then FS Road 8303.  Park at the Trail of Two Forests Sno-Park.  The Ape Caves are about 1 mile on snowshoes further down FS Road 8303. It is about 2.5 to 3 hours one way between Lakewood and the Sno-Park.

REQUIRED PASSES: 1 Sno-Park Permit per vehicle. 1-day ($20) and seasonal ($40) Sno-Park Permits can be purchased at REI in Tacoma and Olympia, as well as at several stores in Cougar (such as Lone Fir Resort, 16806 Lewis River Road [SPUR 503], (360)[masked]). You can also buy a pass online at https://fortress.wa.gov/parks/ecomm/sno/dsnostp0.asp (you print out your receipt and display it on your dashboard). Note: The Northwest Forest Pass is not accepted at Sno-Parks.

HIKE DETAILS (courtesy David Turley): 1 mile of snowshoeing plus 1.5 miles of caving in the upper lava tube, one way; 2 miles of snowshoeing plus 3 miles of caving, round trip. The main entrance to both upper and lower lava tubes is one mile north of the Trail of Two Forests Sno-Park. The easier LOWER lava tube is .75 mile one way. It can be hiked down and back in an hour. The more difficult UPPER cave or lava tube is 1.5 miles long and takes 2.5 hours to complete. The upper lava tube requires scrambling over 27 boulder piles and an 8 ft high lava fall. In the summer, the hikes are a one-way trip followed by a hike through the forest to get back to the parking lot.  Because of the snow, a forest ranger said the UPPER cave would be a 2.5 hour hike going up and coming back through the cave. Because of the round-trip he doesn't recommend we do it, but it is up to us if we want to make the round trip in the upper cave. (2.5 hours).

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT: Ten essentials, snowshoes, and AT LEAST TWO LIGHT SOURCES (e.g. flashlights, headlamps) PER PERSON.  Prepare for winter driving and hiking conditions. FEB. 5, 2013 UPDATE: Sno-Park at Trail of Two Forests (where we'll be parking in the vicinity of the Ape Caves) is open with 2 feet of snow.  Bring snowshoes!

This outing might have to be rescheduled. The weather forecast is cause for concern. However, it is a little early to do anything (the forecast could change).
If we do reschedule, I'll let you know ASAP.

    February 17, 2013

  • Chuck M.

Who else wants to drive? The only people I know will do so are Lorrie and myself.
If you want to drive, please let me know in the comments. I'll check on the road conditions on Tuesday.

In other administrivia, I fixed the RSVPs so that you can once again make or change them. That probably happened when this outing got put on hold.

OK-two more event hosts are needed to help lead and coordinate this trip to Ape Caves! Anyone willing to take on the challenge? :-)

    February 16, 2013

  • Mike T.

    (ie Chuck Martin)..
I can host. I've been to the Ape Caves before. I also know (some) first aid, along with land navigation. The latter will probably not really be necessary, since there's only two ways to go in the tunnels (forward and back). :)

OK! I am new to this whole thing! Will we be gone all day if I can get away to attend? I take care of my mother, so I will have to make arrangements to have someone stay with her!

    • Mike T.

I'm guessing people will start to head home just before dark. Depending on the carpools, some will probably stop for dinner on the way home. If you need to get back earlier than some other carpools, I would suggest coordinating with a carpool who wants to return to Tacoma earlier than later :)

    • Mike T.

We can almost always accommodate the best we can :-)

If you are looking for drivers, I can carry 4-6 passengers in my Land Rover. I also have a NW Forest pass.

I won't be able to make it, but be prepared for snow! I went a couple years ago in April and a 4' wall of it was blocking the road.

Sounds great, and I'll be up for it. Did you show where it is on the map?

Not yet, but it is close to the town of Cougar, WA. Will update the event description this weekend when I'm largely done with work stuff.

Hey ppls, sure I'm down for any day, I have a NWF pass we can use, what route do we want to take 1-5 or the back way? If we go the back way we may be able to get a look at St Helen's?

    December 3, 2012

  • Neil

Setted the location to be the usual carpool gathering location in Lakewood. Although I think the time of gathering may have to be changed to a bit earlier (7:15 AM?), since with all the people and the inevitable pitstops, plus the distance it'll be closer to a three-hour drive one way. Also a NW Forest Pass is required for parking so I can add this to the event description. Typing this while administering a midterm to my students heh. :-)

How does February 23rd sound to every one? It's the 4th Saturday of the month and gives everyone plenty of time to arrange time off if possible.

I'd like to visit this place -- the geology of these features are indeed interesting. I suggest trying to do this after the Christmas holidays, though, as the calendar tends to get a little crazy this time of year.

After the new year sound perfect... actually anytime after the end of January would be great. Winter is blah weather but it can still be fun. Might be more fun when it warms up, either way me and my partner's Melissa and Chip are signed on to go. I can fit 2 more in my car and hopefully more people get interested and can drive another vehicle as well. I'd be more than happy to provide snacks and stuff as well :)

    December 2, 2012

  • Neil

Depending on when this happens, I'd like to go... particularly the upper cave since I've only been to the lower cave portion. Been there only once in the middle of spring. However I won't be able to go until after the new year.
