Kayaking Weekend with Tipi Camp out, BBQ and Campfire.
Join travel buddies as we head off for a fun filled weekend in the heart of the countryside with kayaking on both days and an evening camp out in tipi's with a BBQ and campfire. What better way is there to spend a summer weekend? We will meet in Bedford at Longholme Café, get kitted out in paddling equipment and receive full tuition and life jackets before setting off. I have chosen the bag drop service so our bags will be waiting in our clearing upon our arrival. This saves us having to carry our luggage with us on the kayaks and makes for a much more pleasurable and easier experience. We will spend approximately 4 hours on each day on the water and the group has a mixture of one person and two person kayaks so we can swap around as we please. Our journey on the river will take us downstream. On warm days people often report seeing turtles sunbathing in the trailing branches of the Willows on the water. We will pass under old bridges and go past Priory Marina (housing some beautiful narrow and wide beam boats. The river then opens onto a long (500 metres) straight wide stretch, a hot spot for swans and geese. We will have a break at some point after a couple of hours for a picnic lunch. ( you need to bring this with you) In a couple of instances we will need to take the kayaks out of the river and walk them a few metres across grass and put them in the river again to continue our journey... so it's all hands on deck..... We will be spending the night in Matchstick wood, a wilderness campsite. We will need to pull the boats out using the steps and make our way into the camp, using the map to find our own private clearing in the woodland, complete with long drop loo, wood store and most importantly, a campfire, to sit round under the starry night sky. Once we have pitched our Tipi's ( ladies and men will be separate) we will settle in, get the BBQ going and get a campfire roaring with the wine/ beer cooling in the brook. Then the night is ours..... Morning Campers.... after butties for breakfast in camp and a quick tidy up, we have our boats ready on site, so we can get back on the water and make our way upstream on the river great Ouse. We will make a stop on the way for cake on the river bank before heading back to Bedford where we will arrive at approximately 3pm. Then we can find a local pub for a quick pint before heading home or can get back straight away, whichever you prefer. PLEASE NOTE: There will be a certain amount of, dare I say the work "WORK" on this weekend trip. The kayaks need to be carried, the campfire made, wood collected and the BBQ tended too as well as setting up camp and erecting the Tee Pee's. it always works best when everyone pitches in and we can get everything done together giving the group lot's of time to relax after the days efforts!
