TRIP NOW FULL. 12 TRAVEL BUDDIES GOING!!!
Celebrate New Year in the capital City of Sweden as we head to Stockholm on a three night break staying at a 4 star hotel in the city. See in the start of 2020 with a delicious three course dinner and watch the fireworks erupt all over the city to the chime of the Stockholm Cathedral bells.
Spend New Years Day either relaxing or taking a snowy hike in the Swedish woodland before relaxing in a traditional Sauna and even revitalising yourself in an ice hole in the lake.
Reaching the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one always takes us to that verge, that invisible edge of accomplishment that awakens the urge to celebrate. We have made it one more time to the beginning of something new and we should make sure to start it in grand style!
Day 1 Monday 30th
Upon arrival in Stockholm we will take our private transfer to the 4 star Elite Palace Hotel where we will be staying for the next 3 nights.
We will be sharing twin rooms, they have Wifi , minibars and hairdryers.
A varied breakfast is included each morning. There is an option to have a room to yourself for a supplement of £90 for the 3 nights. This needs to paid at the same time as the balance.
After checking in we will head to Vasaparken, for a walk. It is only 12 minutes from the hotel and the perfect place for a wander, it also has a skating rink for those who want to have a go.
Dinner will be booked local to the hotel.
Day 2 Tuesday 31st, NEW YEARS EVE.
After breakfast we will wrap up warm and walk to the harbour ( approx 40 mins) to embark on a boat tour. During the 2.5 hour tour, a guide on board will tell us about the history of the different sights in the Stockholm archipelago, the second largest in the Baltic Sea.
There is a cafeteria on board that serves hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, salads and pies.
After the tour concludes we have the afternoon to explore Stockholm,
There are many places to stop and have a warm drink and watch the world go by when it gets a bit chilly.
Some of the must see sights are as follows.
The Vasa Museum
This unique museum is named after the Vasa ship, which sank in Stockholm in 1628 – just mere minutes (yes, minutes!!) after taking off. After nearly three hundred years at sea, the Vasa was retrieved and preserved in a museum. It’s in fantastic condition because Stockholm has uniquely brackish waters, which basically fossilised the Vasa ship and kept it in excellent condition.
Nowadays, it’s the world’s only conserved 17th-century ship, and it’s a staggering 99% original! The museum offers guided tours and screenings in English regularly, included in the price of admission. The museum offers rotating exhibitions, a timeline of its preservation, a shop with souvenirs, and a restaurant. It’s an incredibly unique experience that can only be had in Stockholm, so let's be sure to make a visit. (Entrance fee is approx £10)
The ABBA Museum
Walk in Dance out!
ABBA The Museum is no ordinary museum. It’s not just about the original costumes, gold records and so many other wonderful items of memorabilia – it’s about you! Feel what it’s like to be onstage with ABBA, to sing at the famous Polar Studio or to dress up in those legendary costumes (virtual) (Entrance is around £21)
The world's first open-air museum, founded in 1891. Here you can stroll through five centuries of Swedish history, from north to south, with a real sense of the past all around the historical buildings and dwellings, peopled by characters in period dress. Living history over 150 dwellings and other buildings from all over Sweden have been dismantled and reassembled in an area of[masked] m2 at Skansen. You can travel back in time and meet people from the past. (Entrance is around £8)
Gamla Stan the Old Town
Browse through the adorable red stalls that sell crafts and ornaments, as well as Swedish food and hot mulled wine. This is also the perfect place to pick up some Swedish souvenirs — there are tons of handcrafts and decorative ornaments for sale in the markets. With a dusting of snow on the ground, this couldn’t be a more magical place to get in the winter spirit in Stockholm!
The public transport is really easy to use in the city, buses and trams are very regular so if we don't want to walk everywhere there are other options.
For that last evening of 2019 we will spend it in the same way as they do traditionally in Sweden, getting together with friends, enjoying a delicious evening meal before wrapping up and heading off to watch the fireworks erupt over the city.
Day 3 Wednesday 1st Jan. New Years Day.
Today can be a lazy day if you like, a late breakfast and some more sightseeing ( some attractions may be closed for the holiday)
Those that feel the need to start the New Year with gusto we will leave the hotel after a late breakfast and take public transport to Hellesgarden.
This is a national park outside of the city. There are a variety of hiking trails ranging from 3-10 km so we can see how we feel on the day. After all of that exertion there is a sauna where we can relax our aching bones and even an ice hole in the lake for those that are brave enough to have a go! (I have done this before and it is a really amazing and refreshing experience, trust me :)
Afterwards, a relax in the cafe and a piece of cake perhaps before making our way back to the hotel. (Sauna entrance is around £9, please note that you can only wear a towel in the sauna and that you might want to take a small padlock with you for your locker. There can also be purchased on the day.)
The day at Hellesgarden can be as busy or as relaxing as we please, if you don't want to hike, why not just make full use of the sauna, the coffee shop and the beautiful scenery.
The Travel Buddies trips work on the basis that as long as you are having a good time then that is what matters, if you don't feel like coming on one of the excursions or joining the rest of the group for dinner one evening then that is absolutely fine. This is an adventure for everyone and there is nothing worse than having to go somewhere/do something that you don't really fancy!
