Due to the overwhelming popularity and huge success of the first visit to Kiev over Easter in 2017 when we took 24, we decided to go again at Easter this year, but that sold out too!

So apart from the third group who are going in May this year, we decided to go all over again in Easter 2019, so no annual leave needed!

Some people wonder if there's any trips that Travel Together wouldn't do or contemplate organising, to which I always answer..... very few!! So when one of our trusted and regular members sent me a link to a company that organises tours to the Chernobyl power plant, my imagination and interest was piqued! Therefore, we're off to another new country and yet another new destination for Travel Together members..... Ukraine!

The two main reasons for this trip are the amazing and beautiful city of Kiev..

And of course, the fascinating, the haunting, the historic and site of one of the most significant dates in history........ Chernobyl, allbrought to us by our good friends at Radio Pro Active.

This will be our itinerary whilst in Ukraine......

Day 1 - Friday 19th April - Departure day

Meeting at the Wethersppons in the South Terminal at 10.00, we'll be flying direct to Kiev and arriving at approx 17.40. From there we'll have a private transfer to take us to our hotel to check in. After check in and a freshen up, it'll just be time to have a little explore and enjoy dinner (NOT included) before our first full day tomorrow.

Overnight Accommodation - 4* Ukraine Hotel

Day 2 - Saturday 20th April - A full day to explore Kiev at your leisure

After a complimentary breakfast you'll have the whole day at your leisure. As is usual on a Travel Together trip, you can do as much or as little as you wish. Whether you choose to remain with the group all day or go off to wander at your own pace, it's your day. We will have a small suggested itinerary of some of the things you may like to see or do whilst in Kiev.

Some of these may include the following..

Kyiv Pechersk Lavra also known as the Kiev Monastery of the Caves

Mariyinsky Palace

M.M. Gryshko National Botanical Garden

Museum of The History of Ukraine in World War II

And so much more. Whether your thing is architecture, history, cuisine, art, nature, nightlife, culture, music.....there's an abundance of it all for you to explore in Kiev.

On the last trip we found two free walking tours that cover much of the city, one from 12.00 - 15.00 and one from[masked]. Between the two, you'll have the perfect opportunity to explore and discover so much about this fascinating city.

You can see what the tours include be following the links....

Morning Tour (starts at 12.00) - Tour includes Independence Square, St Michael’s Cathedral, St Andrew’s Church, St Sophia Cathedral, Golden Gates and Prorizna street

Afternoon Tour (starts at 16.00) - Tour goes along Khreschatyk street and includes such sights as the Arch of Friendship, Mariyinskiy Palace, National Bank of Ukraine, House of the President, National Theatre and famous House with Chimeras.

By which time it'll be time for dinner, a few drinks then an early(ish) night in preperation for our big day tomorrow.

Overnight Accommodation - Ukraine Hotel

After a complimentary breakfast, we'll be picked up at 08.30 (TBC), where we'll meet our guide for the day. Our representative will check your passport details before you board the minibus. Along the way we will play a video explaining the background to Chernobyl with some haunting footage filmed at the time of the accident. Over 100 km later we enter Dytyatky (on the border of the 30 km Exclusion zone) and undergo document checks by the military. You will also meet your government appointed guide for the day here. We drive onwards to Chernobyl and meet with the management of the Chernobyl Inter inform Agency to give us a rundown of the day’s events and history of the site at the museum. On the way we will stop in Kopachi village, to walk around the abandoned kindergarten.

We then head towards the Power Plant, passing the 10 km border and check point. We view the abandoned building work of the unfinished 5th and 6th reactors and cooling towers and pass the monument to the firemen that lost their lives following the disaster. We soon later reach reactor number 4 and are allowed photograph opportunities for a short time at a distance of 100 m.

We then drive through the Red Forest and onto the visit the dead town of Prypyat, the town which housed the workers of the power plant and their families. Walk around the main town square and view the town hall and theatre. Walk further around the town and see the swimming pool and afterwards the school where you can view leftover books, half marked registers and toys left behind.

Visit the fairground that was due to open days after the disaster, and view the famous Ferris wheel. We then walk around more of the city past apartment blocks and the Prypyat Hotel. Afterwards we return to Chernobyl Scientific centre to view the physical and radio chemical laboratories before being served a three course lunch.

Finally, we drive back to Dytyatky Control Point to measure our radiation levels before exiting and returning to Kiev for around 19.00. After which it'll be a quick change then out for dinner for our final night in Kiev.

Overnight Accommodation: Ukraine Hotel

Day 4 - Monday 22nd April - Departure day

After our complimentary breakfast, you'll still have plenty of time to see more of Kiev. You may possibly want to go back to visit some of the places you saw on the walking tours, or choose just to lose yourselves in the busy historic streets.

Our private transfer will be picking us from the hotel at approx 16.30 (TBC) for our return journey to the airport for our flight at 20.05.

This promises to be a wonderfully unique trip, for very different reasons. many of us have been in awe and wonder at the Taj Mahal, Grand Canyon, Sydney Opera house etc, but just like the prolific experience of visiting Auschwitz, very few people will ever get to see and truly comprehend what happened at Chernobyl on that fateful day, but you will, and remember it for the rest of your lives.
