Elk/Thurston (Chilliwack) RESCHEDULED ~ 13 or 16.5 km ~ 6-7 hrs

  • Tim Hortons

North Parallel Road, Abbotsford, BC (map)

    49.040943 -122.221450

  • Take Exit 95 TCH (Whatcom Rd.) , turn left, go over the freeway, and park in the truckers' parking lot across from Tim Hortons. Watch out for deep potholes!
  • PLEASE READ CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU RSVP*
By signing up for this event, you acknowledge having read and accept the MRHG Terms & Rules.

The first hour of the hike is on a wide and easy trail through the forest.  The trail then becomes increasingly steeper and narrower to a rocky outcrop overlooking Cultus Lake and the Fraser Valley.  Take some photos before ascending to the top of Elk Mountain which is really a ridge and not a discernible peak.  On a clear day, you will be treated to views of the Border Peaks, Mount Baker, and the Chilliwack River below.

From Elk summit, another 30-45 minutes of hiking, along a ridge through sub-alpine meadows resplendent with wildflowers in summer, takes you to an unnamed peak with a a cairn.  From here, the views are spectacular, better than from Elk Mountain.

If the snow has melted, you could  continue to Mt. Thurston, another 30 minutes of hiking.  However, this peak is treed and the views are not as good as from the cairn.  So you may be content having your lunch at the cairn below Mt. Thurston and return the way you came.

Make sure you bring lots of water as there are no creeks except right after the start of the hike.

    Rating:  Intermediate

Distances (return):  8 km to Elk Mtn., 13 km to the cairn, 16.5 km to the top of Mt. Thurston

Net Elevation Gain:  800 m to Elk Mtn, 940 m to the Cairn, 1030 m to Mt. Thurston

Cumulative Elevation Gain to the Cairn: 1134 m; to Mt. Thurston 1300 m

    WHAT TO BRING

Hiking boots or trail shoes with good traction, no runners

Hiking poles if you use them

Sufficient food and liquids for the day

    A first-aid kit

Adequate clothing for the weather (layers)

Personal ID, BC Care Card, Emergency Contact Name and Phone Number

    Insect Repellent

    Sunscreen, Hat and Sunglasses

How to get to the Trail Head

Estimated Driving Time from Vancouver: 1 hour 45 minutes

Take Highway #1 eastbound to Exit #123, Prest Road.  Turn right and head south on Prest Road for approximately 4 km. Turn left on Bailey Road and after 1 km where the  road splits take the right fork to head up the hill on Elk View Road.  Continue for 8 km of paved road.  After the road turns to gravel and becomes the Chilliwack Bench Road, continue another 2 km to a parking area on the left.  The trail starts at the eastern end. There is an outhouse just up from the trail head.

    Car Pooling

We can meet in the truckers' parking lot across the road from Tim Horton's in Abbotsford to arrange for car pooling.  It is 45 minutes from there to the trail head.  Please indicate in your RSVP whether you are interested in car pooling or whether you will be driving to the trail head directly.

    Weather

This hike will be rescheduled if the forecast is for rain or an overcast sky.

I second the other comments, I won't be able to go without a ride. I'm looking to be picked up in Chilliwack, at hwy 1 and Vedder. If you still have a seat, please let me know.

The forecast for Saturday is the pits again. The hike will be cancelled unless the forecast changes to sunny weather.

Hi I would love to carpool as I don't think I will be able to find this place. Looking forward to this one. I haven't hiked for a long time, do you think this hike is suitable for a beginner in decent shape (I am 37, not overweight, no health problems), just not sure how hard this hike really is..

Hi Anita, this is not a hike for beginners or people getting back into hiking. The uphill climb is strenuous and we will be going on to Mt. Thurston which adds more elevation and distance. http://www.chilliwack...

I am also looking for a carpool, thanks

  • Sari

Hi I would much prefer to carpool as well. And not drive to trailhead myself. Anybody who could offer a ride from Abbotsford Tim Hortons? Or even Pitt Meadows if anybody is passing?

Please note that due to the weather this hike has been rescheduled for Saturday, June 28th. I am sorry for any inconvenience, but I'm sure most will agree that we need a sunny day to appreciate the subalpine flora and the views. Please change your RSVP if you cannot make the new date.
