Full Moon Lake Cowen 5/25/13

Camping is planned for Saturday only.

This is the long holiday weekend and the main campground spots got eaten up quickly.  And also this is soon after the Great Grayson Getaway.  People have other things going, so may be limited in their options to attend the event. The plan is that we will camp Saturday only at the group spot near the small boat ramp, which is on the SE side of the lake. This is a primitive site, with a upgraded portapotty a bit down the road. You will need to bring  your own water, too. The noted fee is for those who are camping.

I have reserved the spot.  I have asked those who plan on camping to send me some money to defray the cost of the site.  This will be non refundable, but if you can get somebody to fill in for you, they can pay you to take over your spot. You will have to work it out, but pls let me know if your plans change.  I will send a note to those who plan on camping to further explain the fees.

I would like to have an evening group meal, so let me know what you would like to bring, and if you would like to camp on Saturday nite. I expect that we will not out on the water officially till after 8 PM.

The site is near the small boat ramp on the SE side of the lake, as it is easier to access. This overlooks the water lotus field on the east end of the lake.

Please answer the questions that appear when you sign up for the event.

As always, by joining in this event you are acknowledging that you have read and agree to abide by the Tri-State Kayakers liability waiver. You can find this waiver on the Tri-State Kayakers web site, at: http://www.meetup.com/Tri-State-Kayakers/pages/Legal_Waiver/

Lake Cowan is an awesome lake. Clean, friendly, full of beauty and no one stoled my tie offs in the 24 hours they hung on the car unattended. Lol

    May 22, 2013

    • Karlos D.

those who are not staying over are being asked to cough up $2 to help cover the site cost.

Karlos, the money I sent you is for myself and Jeff Jones. As stated before, we are occupying two tent sites. I think I gave you a count of myself and one guest - that is Jeff. We are both staying for the Sunday float as well. Jemina will be paying seperately but will be sharing my tent. Not sure if she is staying for the Sunday paddle. Hope that helps you keep the numbers straight.

Okay, here is the deal on the trip out to Cowan this weekend. The place where we will be staying is on the southeastern shore of the lake. It’s known as the small boat ramp, and its location has eluded even experienced people who have paddled at Cowan before. Coming from west on SR 350, go north on Beechwood Road. This is roughly a mile east of Yankee. Yankee is the one that leads to the public beach. Stay on Beechwood until you reach the lake. Avoid going much further, as we won’t help you pull your car out of the water. Turn left when you reach the lake, and you should run right into us. It’s the smaller fenced enclosure just east of the ramp. Note there is another ramp nearby. The one I am referring to is very steep and narrow. Email me if you have any questions.

also, if you plan on paddling on Sunday morning, be sure to sign up for that event some Kathy J has an idea of who will be showing up.

Pls note that the spot is fairly big, so it is not likely we will have to turn anyone away who wants to camp. Plenty of space to spread out. Also there are grills there, so cooking some tasty animal meat is certainly an option. I will see if I can snag a bag of charcoal. If you can't camp, at least plan on staying afterwards for a bit. If you are bringing a guest, I would appreciate if you would double up on your food contribution. I would also like a few bucks from each who are not camping to cover the cost of the site. I will roll any extra over to the group to help pay for the meetup fees. A few sticks of wood for the fire would be nice, too. Again, no adult beverages allowed at this site.

Be sure to bring a white lite or glow stick to mark your boat while on the water after dark. A head lamp is also nice to have available.

  • Karlos D.

Hey, if you have a small portable table that you can bring, pls post a note and let me know. Kathy J sed she is bringing one, but a few extras might be needed. Also, be sure to bring a chair to sit on. A few logs for the fire will be muchly appreciated.

So here is what I am thinking. Maybe $6 per tent, with another $4 if you are sharing your tent with somebody else. I plan on making breakfast on Sunday, so some of the money will cover that meal. $2 per head would be nice for those not staying over. For those who have not attended such an event before, just bring something to share on Saturday evening for our communal meal. I will publish a list about 2 weeks out to limit dupes. I hope to eat around 6 pm and be ready to head out around 8 pm. Stay as late as you want, but we ask that nobody come or go by themselves on the water after dark.

Nothing official planned for Sunday other than packing up and making sure the place looks like it did before we arrived. Sorry to say, but no adult beverages are allowed on this site. Also, the portapotty is a bit down the road, but you can always visit the weeds. There is no running water present.

    If interested, we can have a knaked full moon kayaking option, tho no sit-on-tops will be permitted. ;-}
